It's just so sad. I tell myself that he was enough of a dick to immediately murder someone for the ring, when Frodo carried it for so long while retaining his goodness but even so, damn. The scene where he's watching the hobbits sleep and Sam wakes up and tells him off JUST BEFORE he's about to have the realisation that he wants to be friends with them, not hurt them breaks my heart every single time.

Tolkien wrote in one of his letters that Gollum could never be redeemed (for Catholic theological reasons, basically), but, you know, death of the author, and all that.
