Bill Nye "extra kids" penalty -context

(Anonymous) 2017-04-29 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I just heard about this business about Bill Nye suggesting some kind of 'extra kids penalty" and I'm looking for context. But all I keep getting are super alarmist shit from conservative sources. I just want to know what was actually said so I can judge for myself.

I can't help but feel like people are salty about the gender and sexuality episode and are trying to get him on anyghing they can.

It's from an open discussion with a panel on his new show Bill Nye Saves the World. He wasn't actually suggesting it, it was just part of the discussion.

Though I will say when I first googled all I got were far right crazy sources, nothing legit at all. They are definitely freaking out and trying to get him on anything they can right now.

Same I got. "Bill Nye the Commie Guy" "Bill Nye the Anti-Family Guy" blah blah blah. "Bill Nye the Anti-Science Guy"

They're are massively salty.

"Should we have policies that penalize people for having extra kids in the developed world?" Nye asked Travis Rieder, an academic at Johns Hopkins University.

"I do think we should at least consider it," Rieder replied.

"Well, 'at least consider it' is like, 'do it,'" Nye countered.

This is the quote I found. Seems totally taken out of context as usual.

See that's what I figured. Not surprising but damn disappointing.

The gender episode was pretty dumb, but the child penalty thing now was definitely taken out of context.

Normally I'm pretty live-and-let-live, but we shouldn't let people have 19 kids. At that point, unless the "parents" are super-rich, they're turning the older kids into babysitters and depriving them of care.

I've known people from families with only two or three kids who've been essentially turned into the caregivers for their younger siblings. It's not a large family thing, it's a neglectful and ego-driven parents thing. It's just more obvious with larger families because we're already looking for things to judge them on.

I don't think it's a great thing for the kids, but from a population standpoint, families that large are very rare and balanced out by people who have no kids.

I think he was already on a conservative hit-list because he goes after evolution denial and climate-change denial pundits.
