NA

It's more like "for years he thought he totally succeeded in murdering his brother", but I kind of get what you're saying. I still agree with OP that Overwatch fandom is weird as fuck about this though. Just because other woobie characters have done a lot worse (there's that one hugely-in-the-closet gay serial killer guy from that horror game who tries to carve up handsome men to turn them into women so he can marry them and tumblr absolutely creamed their collective underwear over him) doesn't mean that this one isn't another case of "wtf fandom".

What on Earth is the game you're referencing?

Outlast. You know, there was this one WIP shipping fic that was dealing with the psychological after effects of the main character having been tortured by the dude, but once he managed to free the residents the batshit insane guy (Eddie I think) was put away in a proper hospital where he was being very very heavy rehabilitated. Fandom decided that, no, this character was completely and utterly unredeemable (you'd think with the way people always go 'OH THEY HAD A TRAGIC PAST' they would have been all up on woobie-fying Eddie, because his past was EXTREMELY fucked up) and the main character couldn't have his own psychological shitstorm to go through, and, lawdy, it was ridiculous. The author wasn't trying to glorify the Stockholm in any sort of way, and they got ranoff the internet. They never finished the fic and I'm still hella salty because you could tell a lot of research went into the psychological aspects and the different things as well and it was getting to the good part (I was 75% sure the dude wasn't getting better in any sort of case and was gonna snuff the fuck out the main character. Listen, I love a good mindfuck fic).

To add on to the other anon, it's specifically the DLC "Whistleblower" for the first game and they're talking about Eddie Gluskin. He's one of the most horrifying enemies I've ever seen in video games period, and not just because of what anon mentioned - he wants the perfect bride, and God help you if you don't measure up. Nothing like a guy who calmly stalks you while either warmly calling you "Darling!" or bitterly spitting out "whore", often within one minute.

It's a stretch to say the character is in the closet though. Like I said he wants the perfect bride, all his pre-game victims were female, and the experiments done on him makes him literally think anyone he sees is a women. Since he's in a male-only asylum it's... bad news for anyone who runs into him. Including the protagonist.
