I never heard of this version before. Did it have to make the same changes as the Hitchcock version to appease the censors?

I haven't seen this, but I can't imagine it would have - the Hays Code didn't exist anymore and this looks British, anyway.

What bothered you about the adaptation, OP?

I found this costume drama on VHS in a secondhand store years ago, but when I tried to watch it, it was all wibbly and then chewed up. I was disappointed because I liked Emilia Fox from Pride and Prejudice and Charles Dance from Bleak House, but never tried to find another copy of it. I still want to watch it, so I think I might try and ebay it. I haven't read the book, so hopefully it won't disappoint me as much as it did you, OP.

Yeah, this is the worst adaption of this. There is another miniseries as well which is much better, but I think it was never sold.

Rebecca isn't my favourite book either, OP, but it left a really really strong impression on me and I came away with a very vivid mental image of the setting and characters. So I can see why this would be jarring.

I'm ngl, looking at the cast, I assumed this was going to be a Game of Thrones secret.

Other than that, I have nothing of value to contribute because I've yet to read the book (it's on my list) and I've never see any of the film adaptations.

I'm sorry it disappointed you, OP. That's never fun.
