Sometimes it's all I can do to resist asking if people are autistic when it comes to understanding characters' motivations (or in other nonfandom comments). Not in a hur-dur sort of way. Like, literally I can't fathom how someone who is neurotypical doesn't understand some of the things they say they're just trying to understand.

But that's a mean thing to ask and easy to be misinterpreted.

I totally get that. I feel that way about some people and their real life interactions. I guess that more people are just really, really bad at reading other people than we realized?

I know what you mean.

I feel like I've come across that a lot lately, people not understanding why a character did a particular thing, when it's suuuuper obvious, and it's like...do you understand human behavior at all? Have you ever actually been in any sort of relationship with another person, ever? (And I'm not talking hidden motivations, I mean super basic stuff, like A being an asshole to B because they both like C and A is obviously jealous/feels threatened, and people are like "OMG why did A do that, I don't get it!!")

I actually knew someone in fandom who was diagnosed with Aspergers during the time I knew her. A year or so before she'd ever mentioned it at all, I had a (totally private) theory that she might have Aspergers, and the first thing that got me thinking about it was that she said she didn't think [X show] was all that shippy - yet [X show] was one of those shows that is strongly based around the will-they-wont-they of a ship.

She was (undoubtedly still is) very intelligent, and perceptive in a lot of ways, which is what made it stand out that she wasn't noticing such a big part of the show's dynamic.

They probably do. And it may take them years to understand people, and only if they'll actually put in the effort. It's really annoying. I'm speaking as someone who DOES have it. When I started getting into anime, and as a result, RP, I couldn't even fathom character motivations. Cringey character analysis, badly written fanfic and RPs, but... I'm grateful to anyone who humored me over the years cause now I'm at the point where I feel like I'm on the other side of the fence, gaping at some of my friends. I try to be patient... but it's so hard.
