KJA is not what I would call an objectively great writer. However, the Young Jedi Knights YA novels that he wrote with his wife were the first Star Wars novels I ever read as a kid and they were my entry point not only into the glorious mess that is the EU but into fandom in general (seriously, I first encountered the concept of fan fiction when I went looking online for more information about the characters from those books.) So he will always have a special place in my fangirl heart for that.
