It wasn't "common slang" thirty years ago.

I can't really vouch for 1987, but I know that by the early to mid 90s it absolutely was common to hear people say "That's so gay!" -- not to mention that old chestnut "gaylord." So, I can't believe it was nary a whispered insult before MST3K started dropping it.

Yeah, I remember this, too, unfortunately.

Well, it was at least common among schoolkids/teens, I don't know about adults.

I can vouch that it was common slang in the early 90s,so late 80s isn't out of the question.

It's been slang for stupid stupid/lame since the late 70s.
