If you're going to replace Glorfindel, I guess I don't see why Elrond is automatically a better choice. I love me some armoured, kick-ass Elrond, but still.

I know someone who completely failed to remember Arwen when reading the books (back before the movies came out) and totally thought Aragorn would get together with Eowyn, only to wonder what the heck Tolkein was trying to pull with this elf chick showimg up out of nowhere at the end. At least they found a way to introduce her that people didn't forget about.

I guess they think so because it's mostly Elrond's magic and the ring he wears that's guarding the borders of Rivendell. It's not something active, but an enchantment (if I remember correctly) of his that kicks in once enemies try to cross the borders.
