The salt thing is prevalent as a repelant for supernatural, as others have stated but ... salt type and location varies (some areas fancy making circles of rock salt and standing inside them while others are all about sea salt on window sills). Iron would be bust in my hometown and painting door or window frames blue works better than salt.
