Surely there must be better ways of communicating your interest in a dull and unoriginal work than referencing two of its most unoriginal elements.

You're being purposefully dense. Presumably OP is attempting to be subtle so as to reduce the chance that they or anyone around them will be embarrassed by their fandom reference.

There's a difference between being subtle, and being vague about generic folklore elements that have been used in hundreds of better works.

I agree that the reference is too vague to bring up instant associations with the series for most people, but I really think you're letting your dislike of the series blind you to the fact that those generic folklore elements are often the topic of in-jokes within the fandom. I've never seen someone bring up salt while discussing Hocus Pocus, but Supernatural fans often discuss and joke about it. It's not at all bizarre or unreasonable for OP to expect that other Supernatural fans will understand the reference they're attempting to make, even though the reference seems so generic as to be meaningless to those of us who don't much care for the show.
