Is this the first late night show you have ever watched? They all have a hype man (usually a band leader) whose job it is to make stupid, comedic comments.

The hype man thing bugged me at first but once I got past my annoyance at the whole concept (I know it's standard but Colbert's the only host I've liked enough to watch regularly), I started finding him adorable.

Yeah, I like him, too. I think he and Colbert have a nice back and forth, and he seems like a cool guy in general.

Barring the racist overtones of this secret, I do find Jon Baptiste a particularly annoying hype man. He never shuts the fuck up! If I have to hear him say "cold-blooded" one more time, I'll scream!

At first I was like "I mean that's a normal opinion-" then I got to the fourth sentence and you lost me

"His face reads white man in blackface"??? What?! That's just his face, man... his perfectly normal face...

I'm actually halfway with OP on this one. There's something about their dynamic that feels really . . . minstrel-y? It certainly doesn't help that there aren't any late night show hosts of color, either.

FWIW I haven't watched other late night shows in their entirety, only in clips, so I don't have anything to compare Batiste/Colbert to. But I suspect that dynamic would bug me in those shows, too.

+1 maybe it's because I feel like the interactions are a bit awkward but the whole white host/black band feels like a weird staple of late night.
