true story: I was scrolling to this secret and my partner, glancing over my shoulder, only saw your AO3 tags on top and immediately said "UGH characterxreader fanfic is so dumb, I hate it so much." before I even read the text. So it's not just F!S, man, it's fandom-wide.

there's lots of slightly more logical yet no less petty reasons for it. most of them are written in second person and I fucking hate second person more than almost anything in a piece of prose. my partner's reason is that they're the laziest form of Mary Sue fic - you can't even be arsed to make up a Mary Sue to self-insert, so you literally self-insert. add that to the overwhelming likelihood that it's going to be poorly-written anyway and...you get the gist.

Furthermore, and I know this is totally illogical, but my gut reaction is to think of the readers as the laziest of all, since they don't even have to write the fic to get their own self-insert fic...someone else does it for them.


They're just lame as hell. If you like them, then full offense, you're lame as hell too HEY LISTEN I DON'T MAKE THE RULES OKAY

then there's also the thing other anons mentioned about the "you" in the story looking and acting completely unlike you, the reader, would. takes you right out, then you can't insert shit.

I'm not a writer or reader but honestly I think you're being utterly childish and that "teehee I don't make the rules" shit only makes you look pitiful.

Maybe it's lazy maybe it's stupid but, ffs insulting people for liking something you don't if it's not hurting anyone is so dumb. There's a difference between "it annoys me because its hard to avoid" and "if you like this you're laaaaame"
