Mostly, I fpund it strange that the animal companions were things that were likely kept on the island to be eaten.

I haven't seen this movie. She had a chicken and a piglet? Did she have a Polynesian rat for the trifecta of typical Polynesian meat animals?

I wondered about that too, though idk, maybe they keep them as pets also? I don't know so much about culture of that area.

I know farm people who treated certain animals like pets but still ate them when they died.

+1. Everyone has some "pet" farm animals, usually hand-raised ones, but you still eat them.
