(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 02:45 am (UTC)(link)Whenever I see people talking about fandom's whitecock problem it's in the general sense. It's about bringing awareness to fandom and showing people that they're not immune from society's racism.
Re: +1
(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 03:18 am (UTC)(link)Well I've seen a lot of fandom discussions that were not framed as being about general "awareness". Finn vs Kylo discourse (whoever you ship them with this seems to be the crux of it..? I'm guessing, it's not my fandom.) is definitely about liking the "wrong" characters for the "wrong reasons". And that can look messy and stupid, from both sides.
But in the end I'd rather messy and stupid than passively sidelining the black character because everyone finds it easier than confronting what we bring in from society. Like you say we're not immune.
I understand why people prefer fandom to be their non-political space, but on the other hand it's not like people don't learn and grow here. OP talking as if it's all about getting people to ship the right penises is just obnoxious.
Re: +1
(Anonymous) 2017-05-05 04:01 am (UTC)(link)I thought the whole Kylo thing was more because people would rather ship two white space nazis than a black guy and a Latino guy (I think?) and less about Kylo actually being involved in a different ship in the traditional sense. The only actual ship wank I've seen on Kylo's end involves him and Rey knocking boots and possibly(?) being siblings?
I do agree it can look messy and stupid on both sides. I've seen some really hamfisted activism regarding this issue, so I do get it.
But I guess ultimately like you said, I'd rather it be messy and stupid than just sweeping it under the rug and pretending that issues and trends don't hold true in fandom and they're pretty unarguably connected to the larger trends of racism in our society.
Re: +1
Still incest though. Ew.

AND you have the same reaction, now, that we had during the Prequels. People DID NOT believe that Padme was gonna be the mother to Luke and Leia....despite being the only major non-force sensitive female in the Pre-Trilogy.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)You want to make people feel shitty on purpose because you think it'll make them better people. Congratulations, you're the same as every fatphobic poor-shaming abstinence only Republican asshat. I love that all you assholes are saying positivity hasn't worked yet so it should be given up on, but obviously negativity's totally worked and wiped out racism in fandom and should be continued.
