I know it's easy for me to say this as someone who has no particular feelings about any of the controversial ships, but maybe the goal of these conversations isn't getting more people to ship POC cock, and it doesn't matter if it scares people away from reading some fic on the internet. Maybe the goal is to confront some ugly biases in fandom and make people feel uncomfortable.

Fucking thank you. I have no stake in any of the ships being talked about here (never saw the new Star Wars for instance), but I never got the feeling that people talking about this were trying to bully others into shipping a particular ship. The only time I've ever really seen diversity being used as a bludgeon was by Klance shippers in Voltron fandom, but Klance shippers tend to be assholes who have a LOT more wank attached to their name than trying to claim that shipping an Asian guy with another Asian guy instead of a Latino guy with an Asian guy means you're racist. They're too busy calling everyone pedophiles and the race wank is an afterthought compared to that.

Whenever I see people talking about fandom's whitecock problem it's in the general sense. It's about bringing awareness to fandom and showing people that they're not immune from society's racism.

Well I've seen a lot of fandom discussions that were not framed as being about general "awareness". Finn vs Kylo discourse (whoever you ship them with this seems to be the crux of it..? I'm guessing, it's not my fandom.) is definitely about liking the "wrong" characters for the "wrong reasons". And that can look messy and stupid, from both sides.

But in the end I'd rather messy and stupid than passively sidelining the black character because everyone finds it easier than confronting what we bring in from society. Like you say we're not immune.

I understand why people prefer fandom to be their non-political space, but on the other hand it's not like people don't learn and grow here. OP talking as if it's all about getting people to ship the right penises is just obnoxious.

I thought the whole Kylo thing was more because people would rather ship two white space nazis than a black guy and a Latino guy (I think?) and less about Kylo actually being involved in a different ship in the traditional sense. The only actual ship wank I've seen on Kylo's end involves him and Rey knocking boots and possibly(?) being siblings?

I do agree it can look messy and stupid on both sides. I've seen some really hamfisted activism regarding this issue, so I do get it.

But I guess ultimately like you said, I'd rather it be messy and stupid than just sweeping it under the rug and pretending that issues and trends don't hold true in fandom and they're pretty unarguably connected to the larger trends of racism in our society.

Cousins. Not siblings. Daisy debunked the Rey Solo thing forever ago.

Still incest though. Ew.

Yeah the main thing that turns me off from the whole Reylo ship is that as things stand in canon, we don't know for sure whether they're related (be it siblings or cousins) or not? So until that gets official canon word of god on whether it is incest or not, I'm not interested in that ship. I'll stick to Finn/Rey and Finn/Poe.

Reason I say cousins very confidently is because Daisy had a recent interview during Star Wars Celebration. She had said that it was pretty obvious as to her parent(s) was by the end of TFA and then she goes on to compare the fan reaction and speculation to what Mark went through in the 80s after Empire came out. Back then, despite the fact that Vader SAID he was Luke's dad, you had people calling bullshit and not believing that. She was likening that to now.

AND you have the same reaction, now, that we had during the Prequels. People DID NOT believe that Padme was gonna be the mother to Luke and Leia....despite being the only major non-force sensitive female in the Pre-Trilogy.

So like with 'omg don't ship Legolas and Gimli that's PEDO and think of the survivors' doesn't actually think Legolas and Gimli is pedo they just hate the ship and don't care about survivors.... you're confirming that the people doing the discourse don't even care about their morally pure brownie point ships, they just enjoy making other fans unhappy for A Greater Cause? Or probably just that they hate the other pairings and like being able to use The Greater Cause to bully them and make themselves feel better. That's nice.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
...No, they're pointing out that there is racism in fandom and that being silent and not pointing out that there is an overabundance of white man ships when it comes to gay does no one any favors and allows casual racism to continue. You should be uncomfortable realizing you only care about white cocks specifically touching.

Get over yourself.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, I'm a huge multishipper and like more non-whitecock pairings to whitecock. I just find it ridiculous that people can't see it's the exact same bullshit used to justify all of tumblr's crusades with the idea that it's not bullying if you have God or Social Justice on your side.

You want to make people feel shitty on purpose because you think it'll make them better people. Congratulations, you're the same as every fatphobic poor-shaming abstinence only Republican asshat. I love that all you assholes are saying positivity hasn't worked yet so it should be given up on, but obviously negativity's totally worked and wiped out racism in fandom and should be continued.
