Sorry OP, but this made me laugh. And not in a laughing-with-you kind of way, either

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. :D

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to think this way too...than I grew up.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I, too, believe I am superior to those who cannot appreciate the cave art of the original masters.

I think everyone has that thought about something they like. I think it's a normal human emotion type of thing.

tbh, while this belief is silly, it's also probably a lot more wide-spread than any of us would like to admit, so I'm not going to get all mock-y about it

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to be judgey and superior about it, but it is a bit eyeroll-worthy, since "old movies" covers a very large and diverse body of work. It's not like it's typical to watch and like all new movies, so if you like some new movies, you would probably like some old movies. Also, what counts as "old?"

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you need to admit it out loud, because every person I've ever met who watches old movies kind of telegraphs this attitude without ever saying a word.

I like old movies too.

I don't feel superior to those who don't watch them; I just feel a little sado for them in that they've decided to cut themselves off from so much interesting stuff.

(Not that there isn't schlocky B&W stuff, but it's not all old hat.)

While I don't feel superior to anyone, I do tend to eye-roll at people who refuse to even give an old movie a try on a stupid basis ("It's not in color!" "It's not HD!" "That's a Grandma movie!")

I think there's a big difference between someone like me, say, who has no particular interest in seeking out old movies, and who doesn't love older movies as a group more than newer stuff for aesthetic reasons, but has seen some and loved a few (Lawrence of Arabia and Lion in Winter are old favorites) and is open to the idea that there's cool stuff there, versus someone who dismisses a huge and diverse body of art as 'old and boring' or whatever. I think anyone who does #2 about anything - video games as art, or rap, or whatever, even if it's not their cup of tea, is probably close-minded in other ways. OTOH if OP also thinks they're better than someone like me, who isn't opposed to old moves but also not especially intrigued, then it's just dumb snobbery.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Who doesn't watch old movies...?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I can kind of understand. Film snobs are annoying, but there are also a fair few negative things to be said about people who think themselves hilarious for decrying older films/tv, going on and on about how they just can't take old movies seriously because of the dated fashion/makeup or slang or acting conventions, etc... as if modern film isn't going to seem just as dated sixty years from now.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say I think I'm better, but when somebody does say they have a blanket block on old movies, I do tend to think they're a bit inflexible. I mean, I get that different social mores, different film conventions and different pacing can be offputting the first couple of times, but it's mostly just a matter of getting used to them. Or, in the case of the latter two, even enjoying them (I prefer the pacing in a lot of older movies, say 70s back).

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, that's fine, but there is a very clear trend toward both racism and misogyny in older films.

This is not to say those trends aren't present in more current films, but I think overall we're moving in the general direction of not being bigoted assholes in our media. So very slowly, I'll grant you, but I think it's happening. This is also not to say that every single "old" film ever is a racist and misogynist pile of shit, but the chances of finding a white person painted to look like someone of a different race gets higher the farther back you go, and the chance of a woman doing something both relevant to the plot and unrelated to having a romantic relationship with a man? Also decreases as the age of the film in question increases.

Again, they're not all bad - there are a few good older movies - but holy fuck, man, I feel like I really have to look hard to find them.

I don't dislike them, I just haven't had the opportunity to watch many of them.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I do like some aspects of old movies. Like how the dialogue tends toward being snappy and refined rather than trying to be more realistic like modern movie dialogue. It can be almost poetic at times, and I like that. 'Network', while not an OLD old movie, was sorta on the cusp of this transition, and is an excellent example of the type of witty, poetic dialogue I'm talking about.

But old movies had their share of issues too. Written in a time when racism and sexism were more prevalent, it can be hard to overlook. I can definitely see why POC and women might stay away from movies past a certain era. I'm a white woman and I cringe at certain parts of my favorite old black and white movie ('Harvey' if you were curious).

I wouldn't say I look down on people who don't like old movies, but I do think it's a little silly to hate entire decades of film en masse without giving it a fair shot.

you are.

Better in what sense?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Does it make you more open-minded about movies? Possibly. Then again you could have something against new movies and that's not better. Does it make you a kinder, more giving person? Nope.
