70) Don't worry. I lose respect for people who honestly believe in God etc. in the twenty-first century too.

[identity profile] digivolution.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Boy you're kind of an asshole.

There's these things called "opinions," have you heard of them before?

(Anonymous) 2008-05-24 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
And I'm entitled to mine, right?

[identity profile] digivolution.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Not when you say "lose respect" for. I have my own opinions, but I wouldn't lose respect for someone else if they thought of something different.

Like I say, boy you're kind of an asshole.

IAWTC.

Yeah, I'm a Christian and I don't lose respect for people who are Atheists. ^^;; I know a lot of cool people who are Atheists.

...Well, of course, I lose respect for Atheists who can't handle people with different beliefs from them. But BESIDES those.

[identity profile] norrowa.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I just... you know, I'm kind of as atheist as they come? Couldn't begin to imagine what it's like to be religious etc. etc. etc. But I don't see why some atheists get so militant about it, and about insisting that religious people are just stupid -- dude, no. How arrogant is that? God is not something we've disproved. And so, er, you know... none of us can know for sure that we're right. It doesn't make us dumb.

And so long as we're not hurting one another, why the heck does it matter? I think religion can be great when it motivates people to try to better themselves and become kinder/stronger/etc.

[identity profile] freakyfanboy.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm, see, you're the sort of person I can really respect. I have different beliefs than you, but at least you don't automatically discount me as a person just because I do.

[identity profile] shadsie.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. I'm a (loose) Christian and I have Athiest, Agnostic and other-belief friends and we can all get along and respect each other for qualities having nothing to do with religion. I see writing someone off just because they have one or two beliefs you don't agree with as being like writing someone off because they say... watch reality shows, or wear a lot of pink -- you may not like their taste, but it doesn't mean they're worthless.

That said, I do loose respect for really militant ANTI-theists - not because they don't get why people believe in God, but because they've basically written whole groups of people off and want them off the planet. In other words, I can respect many people, but I cannot respect someone who doesn't respect my existance, or assumes off the bat that I'm a drooling troglodyte by default because of *one* aspect of my life.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
But I don't see why some atheists get so militant about it, and about insisting that religious people are just stupid

EXACTLY! I'd hug you right now. I've had to deal with fundamental evangelists a lot, and honestly, dealing with a militant aethist feels the exact same way.

Religion (or the lack thereof) is personal. Disrespect is something that follows actions, not personal beliefs

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2008-05-25 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'll agree with you on this.

I mean, with religion I can see 'you're all wrong hell flail ack' as being idiotic, but at least I know why they're doing it. I have no idea what the deal with militant atheists is.

[identity profile] kiwi-from-hell.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. And you're an asshole for them.

(Anonymous) 2008-05-24 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Explain? I'm not trying to be rude, I just want to know why people jump on someone who thinks taking ancient fiction as the absolute truth is stupid.

[identity profile] norrowa.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
You might as well argue that because none of us can know for sure one way or another (and we can't, because there's no way of measuring God), the only intelligent ones are the agnostics.

Religion isn't about stupid or smart.

[identity profile] kiwi-from-hell.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Because we all grew out of the narcissistic phase wherein we imagined everyone else had the precise same experience, knowledge and views as us. I do not "understand" religion. Some people do not "understand" atheism. That is because I have not had their life, and they have not had mine. Their values are different, their belief system is different. And that doesn't fucking make them or me stupid.

Someone is stupid if they insist that their way is the only way. Kind of like you're doing.

[identity profile] digivolution.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

[identity profile] scrawled.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not a Christian, but there's your answer right there. You're offending people by calling something they believe in stupid and regarding people who think differently than you as an idiot. Don't get offended when people get offended back. Listen, you can disagree without completely insulting the side you're arguing against. I know this is F!S, but if you feel you want to be rude, you can't get offended if people wanna call you on it.

You can disagree all you want, and hell, even insult until you're blue in the face but don't get pissed when people call you out about it.

There should be a rule that an argument automatically loses when someone pulls the "I don't respect your opinion" card by default, because why the hell should we respect yours?

[identity profile] shinga.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
You know a lot of Christians these days don't see the Bible as "absolute truth"? That some just take the core basics of it (God's there, Jesus is there, Jesus is cool and taught us some awesome things about how to treat people) but sort of disregard a lot of it because, as you said, it's OLD. Ancient. Things that could have applied then simply can't apply now.

You're making a lot of assumptions about people. THAT'S why you're an asshole.

[identity profile] digivolution.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I really like this stance too. Like, I believe in God and the bible, but I also believe in evolution. So the way I kinda see it is that God put us all on this earth and made the planets and everything, and then we all went from there ane evolved and whatever lmao.

[identity profile] shinga.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! And any Christians who think evolution is somehow incompatible with God... well I see it as incredibly disrespectful to their own faith. As if God suddenly doesn't have the power to have... I don't know, used evolution to bring life? :\

[identity profile] digivolution.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. I've heard so many people complain that Christians don't know anything because clearly there's evidence of evolution. Well, crap, I know that haha. It's been taught in schools, I definitely knoww evolution exists. I'm not going to deny that. But the people that deny the bible when IT exists, whether or not it's fact or fiction, well, that's just not really cool. I can't say for myself whether the bible is true or not, but it is there and it has been taught so...I believe in it :P

[identity profile] acaciabrown.livejournal.com 2008-05-25 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Because you often just form an overall opinion of it without looking at the detail. Not to say it's true, and not that it's in anyway an absolute, but faith helps a lot of people, and you want to take that away from them?
If faith can get you through a crisis of losing a child or coming to terms with someones death do you really want to make the generalist remark of: lulz, you're stupid?

That's horrible .

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2008-05-25 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, no! Why do you get upset when I say that your beliefs are nothing but rubbish in the most rude way possible?"

[identity profile] mature.livejournal.com 2008-05-25 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
See, I assumed this Anon was trying to be sarcastic to the poster of 70.

At least I hope so. I'm agnostic-bordering-on-atheist and I'm not that much of a douche nozzle.

[identity profile] untangles.livejournal.com 2008-05-24 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, I'm an atheist too, but that's a little ridiculous.
