In what way are you a hypocrite in fandom?

trigger: mention of rape

I am of the YKINMK ilk. But I really, really side eye anyone who writes/reads underage rape fics (especially EXTREME underage) for sexual pleasure. I won't harass them but I don't want to be around them.

same.

same. and I enjoy sexy non-con fic. But anything involving underage participants, or animals, is a hard pass and it makes me feel kind of gross about those who like them.

Like...I could sort of get it if it involved hurt/comfort afterwards. But I don't even read non-con fic for ADULTS if it doesn't involve h/c.

Yeah same here. I just keep far away from that kind of thing tbh because I'm all for people doing what they want when it comes to fiction, but that doesn't mean I want to see it at all.

Hm, it depends on the definition of "underage" for me, I think. As long as they're still in the teenage range, I'm... okay with it, though it'd still skeeve me out a bit (unless it was a h/c scenario where the rape was definitely shown as a Very Bad Thing, which... granted, still has its own baggage). Kids, though, hell no. Same as you, I won't hound anybody about it, but man, I will go out of my way to avoid them.

I like noncon and dubcon myself, especially when there's h/c involved, but nothing makes me backbutton faster than underage characters. I understand that it's a fantasy and all, but ugh, gross.

Yeah, likewise. Or just loli/shota in general.

I feel the exact same way.

I guess I'm like OP of that secret in that I draw fanart but I don't really seek out other people's fanart.

I mean I follow artists but not specifically for fanart, I just follow based on if I like a style.

I want ALL THE COMMENTS but I don't comment on things I like.

I am a broke fan who downloads the movies/tv shows I love because I can't afford to buy them. I feel bad because I want the shows not to get cancelled and the movies to get sequels and be successful and such. Yet I still do it.

I do this too and feel really bad about it. As much as I like having an uncut Sailor Moon dub, sometimes I'm in the mood for the old dub. It's long out of print and hideously expensive, so I download the episodes I like.

I used to do this a lot myself but honestly sometimes I didn't even feel bad because it's not like my legal means always count for anything - watching cable doesn't really count unless you have a nielson box and watching things like hulu and netflix doesn't count for a whole lot especially if you're watching a series years later.

I do most of my stuff through legal means these days but if I can't find something legally and the dvds are super expensive then I will download or stream some other way.

I judge straight male fans while being a bi female fan who does a lot of the same focusing on eye candy.

Would you mind elaborating? I promise this is not just a trap so I can yell at you

I'm also a bi female fan and sometimes I have complicated thoughts regarding this, I like eye candy but I don't really like objectification. If a female character is presented as nothing more then an object, I'm more likely to be annoyed then turned on.

I think a big issue is so much sex appeal is through the male perspective and is designed specifically for men. I don't even find fanservice to always be sexy, a lot of times it's just embarrassing.

If something I'm neutral about or even like has a really horrible fandom, I'll immediately switch to hating it.

But when I love something first and it turns out to have a horrible fandom, I judge the people who hate it because of that.

Ooh, this is a really good one. I hadn't really thought of it so succinctly, but I'm absolutely the same way. I genuinely won't give Voltron: Legendary Defender a try based on its fandom, but I spent a long time defending Sherlock and claiming the fandom wasn't half as bad as people made it out to be. (That said, now that S4 kind of turned me off to the show, I've kind of switched over to disliking it even more because of the fandom...)

I'm delighted when people read my fics and leave comments, but I read almost no fanfiction at all - though if I read something and like it, I do leave a review. I just get frustrated really easily by not being able to find what I want, or when I do find what I want, the writing is pretty underwhelming.

Re: Inspired by #3

I say I don't judge people by what they ship. But if they only ship het I kind of side-eye them. Same if they're a little too vocal about how awful interracial pairings are and how they'd never ship them.

Re: Inspired by #3

(Anonymous) 2017-05-17 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
if they only ship het I kind of side-eye them.

If they're the sort of only-ships-het person who announces publicly that they only ship het, as though they really want people to know that about them, and never gives any sort of reason for it, then I understand side-eyeing them. But if you notice without any prompting from them that all their ships happen to be het, then I think side-eyeing them makes no sense. Shipping is like attraction; you don't choose it, it chooses you.

I try to be a good and positive person and I don't like seeing people get unfairly picked on...but I love reading wank and bad fanfiction.
