What about the people who actually need 'em

Nobody needs them. Kids that have short attention spans will just need to learn to work harder and actually pay attention instead.

So it's just laziness?

Yup. Some kids need to work harder than others, that is just life. They need to decide if they want to put the work in, or sit at home playing with toys. Same as it ever was. What they cannot be allowed to do is sit playing with toys in the classroom and distract the kids that are there to learn and drag everyone down with them.

NAYRT

I work with kids who have ADHD. They are trying harder than you could possibly imagine.

I'm glad you were perfect when you were a child, but not everyone was.

DA

Why is giving them a spinny toy the fidget solution, as opposed to them tapping their pen or shaking their leg as has always been available? Or doodling on page margins? Something that doesn't overtly distract other students.

Nah. I was diagnosed with ADHD from an early age and focusing during classes was really hard for me even if I tried really hard. Not gonna get too much into it but it sucked.

Later on I worked as a teacher for a while and learned that what helped the kids and adults keep focus and more retain information for a longer time was making classes more dynamic and fun for them. Even the quirkiest ones would keep focus because they where having fun.

What I'm saying is that yeah, maybe getting rid of fidget spinners and toys during class isn't a bad idea because toys most of the time don't belong in class, but I also think that blaming the kids for not being able to keep to themselves instead of finding ways to help them learn solves absolutely nothing.

I am a teacher and I have a lot of kids in my classes with various issues (autism spectrum, ADHD, defiant disorder, etc) that these are supposedly good for 'helping' and let me tell you they 110% do not work. Something that's been around for awhile and does work some of the time? Those little koosh balls or stress balls. Simple, soundless, easy. Also, letting the kid stand in place and wiggle about instead of demanding they sit still. But fidget spinners? Complete and utter toy distraction.

Nobody needs them. Anyone who tells you they help with ADHD and such are liars.
