This is why it is important to download all fics for offline reading. That way if an author goes all primmadonna you've got it backed up and can disseminate still to other fans. Keep circulating the tapes applies just as much to fanfic as it does for shows.

Authors can be as "primadonna" as the like in my opinion (not my place to judge), but the lack of download options is one of the reasons I avoid ff.net like the plague. If anyone have a good workaround, preferably some automated e-book maker), I'd love to know it.

Calibre is an e-reader organiser which has a f2f.net plugin - at least it used to, I haven't used it in a while. Iirc, it also had a built-in "check for updates"option.

I use Calibre, but wasn't aware of any plugin for fanfiction.net. How do you set it up? (Or where do I find instructions?)

I use Codex Reader on my tablet. You can download and read on the app or export as an epub.
