So, as soon as wheels went up on Air Force One (for Trump's first international visits) a bunch of news broke.

-Trump told Russians he fired Comey so they would not be investigated.

“I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job,” Mr. Trump said, according to the document, which was read to The New York Times by an American official. “I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off.”

Mr. Trump added, “I’m not under investigation.”

-Jared Kushner is apparently being investigated for connections to Russians.

-Comey has agreed to testify before Senate Intel Committee.

How will Trump get out of this one? I can't imagine how tense Air Force One is right now.

His links to Russia were known ahead of his election, so as entertaining as all this is, there isn't anything illegal here. The people knowingly (or blindly) elected a guy who was into intelligence sharing with Russia and since the President gets to say who and what he shares with whomever he wants this is just how it is. This outrage is theater, nothing more.

There is a difference between having a business in Russia and colluding with Russians to disrupt American elections.

The only disruption was stuff that was already in the public domain already in some form or another, or scurrilous rumors of the sort that always go around. We all drank deep of the fountain of fake news, but that is a first amendment issue. There has been no interference in the actual apparatus of elections, no tampered voting machines, no altering of ballots, nothing like that.

I don't think we know that. There was the appearance of ballot-box stuffing in Wisconsin on election night, even if they came up with an "explanation" later.

Even if you accept that nothing is illegal if the President does it - and I don't agree, but even if you accept that - that still doesn't make the outrage "theater". Just because he was elected doesn't mean people have to think what he does is good or proper. People are outraged at what he did because they're outraged at what he did. There's nothing invalid about that. What the fuck are you talking about "theater"

I don't think ayrt thinks nothing the president does is illegal. It's just that, relevant to this particular situation, the president has final say on what to do with confidential information.

I agree with the rest of your comment though. It's perfectly valid to disagree with what he did.

I agree with the conclusion that revealing confidential information was not illegal. I don't agree with anon's line of reasoning about how it's fine because he was elected and this was known about him therefore it's legal.

Okay but there's still a fucking process he has to go through and he didn't, and he endangered lives to be all buddy-buddy with Putin-it-in-Trump's-ass which is basically fucking treason.

That's like saying people have no right to be mad about a travel ban or building a wall or repealing the ACA because Trump said ahead of time he would do those things. People disagreed with those ideas before the election and they disagree with them now. The fact that Trump won doesn't somehow magically change the minds of everyone in the country. People aren't "acting surprised," they're expressing disagreement.

I miss when having an affair with a consenting adult was a contender for "most fucked-up thing a president has done".

It was never a contender, not when literal and actual genocide had and still has the top spot.

You'd think so, but they don't try and kick you out of office for that. Priorities are fucked here.

That wasn't because of the affair it was because he lied while under oath about it.

I miss when "lying under oath" could get a president kicked out of office--okay, Bill Clinton wasn't, but if lying under oath was still such a reprehensible thing, well...

The only proper remedy if those allegations are substantiated is impeachment, and there won't be impeachment until 2018.

It'd need to be major to do it before then. It makes no political sense for Republicans to impeach him before the midterms. It wouldn't placate anyone already upset and anything that came from it would only hand the Dems a stick to beat them with. If they take the hit on midterms they can impeach the tool, say that they are listening and then give special pleading to say they are working to turn things around and give Mike Pence a chance to make that difference and since the Presidentials would fall within his honeymoon period, the public would indeed give him that chance.

They won't have the choice after the midterms, I don't think.

You can only impeach the president for high crimes and misdemeanors. Which he hasn't committed, despite wishful thinking otherwise.

If he did fire Comey to impede an investigation, that clearly would fall into the category of high crimes and misdemeanors, as intended by the Constitution and its framers and as used in Constitutional practice. If those allegations are substantiated, then impeachment would be the proper remedy and the appropriate remedy.

Democrats were after Comey too for his incompetent actions. As soon as he was fired he became the standard bearer for law enforcement.

Make up your blinking minds already.

None of this has anything to do with Comey's competence, or Democrats, or Republicans. The question is whether it's an impeachable offense to fire the director of the FBI in order to prevent an investigation into yourself and your associates. The other things you're talking about are sidelines which, presumably, either piss you off or are intended to piss other people off. But they're just not really relevant.

There's a difference between being after someone for being incompetent and then them getting fired as a cover-up for something else, you fucking idjit.
