The imagination has been so debased that imagination, being imaginative, rather than being the lynchpin of our existence now stands as a synonym for something outside ourselves like science fiction or some new use for tangerine slices on raw pork chops. My very favorite line in all of literature is from Dostoevsky's The Idiot. It made me cry the first time I read it, both because of the context and because it spoke so simply to what I was feeling in myself at the time:

"I almost do not exist now, and I know it; God knows what lives in me in place of me."

It means nothing without context, but there's a single paragraph at the ending of an Orson Scott Card story that I am completely incapable of rewriting. There's not a single word I could change to make it more fitting than it already is.

So, so many. A few dozen from Fugitive Pieces alone.

But I'll pick the very simple final line of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close: "We would have been safe." In doesn't mean much out of context, but in context it cuts to the core of what it is to experience loss and grief in a way few lines do.

And okay, it's the opposite of original, but there's a reason "Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt" has survived so long and become so widely known that it's basically become a meme. It's mostly used in a jokey way these days (which I doubt Vonnegut would have minded at all), but I think in its original context, its a line that captures a longing so widely and deeply felt you could almost consider it a quintessential human longing. Actually, this and the Incredibly Close line have that in common I think.

What is everyone doing this weekend?

It is my nephew's birthday so I am attempting to make a chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. If the weather stays as forecasted, we can hopefully grill out as well. Other than that, I'll be watching some old horror movies and sleeping. :|

A fanfic series I was enjoying on AO3 got deleted with no explanation. I didn't even get to finish reading it. I can't figure out how to send PMs on AO3, so I went to the author's profile, where she had her tumblr linked, so I sent an ask (not a demand, just a "why'd you delete it"), but was never answered. :( Is there any place I can go to ask the general public if anyone has a copy of it saved that they can share with me? I know places to ask "hey does anyone have a link to this fic I forgot where to find", but none for "hey does anyone have a copy of this fic that no longer exists". I'm really down about it.

Ridiculous local controversies

Are there any controversies in your local area that are ridiculous or unnecessary.

the controversy over changing the Alamo museum to reflect its wider history, which some people claim will ruin the site's message as a monument to "independent Texas" just makes me want to laugh and shake my head. Really. The Alamo is more than just one battle. Why shouldn't visitors get to learn about more of its history?

Trump Watch!

So, as soon as wheels went up on Air Force One (for Trump's first international visits) a bunch of news broke.

-Trump told Russians he fired Comey so they would not be investigated.

“I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job,” Mr. Trump said, according to the document, which was read to The New York Times by an American official. “I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off.”

Mr. Trump added, “I’m not under investigation.”

-Jared Kushner is apparently being investigated for connections to Russians.

-Comey has agreed to testify before Senate Intel Committee.


How will Trump get out of this one? I can't imagine how tense Air Force One is right now.

This post popped up on my dash by this soon-to-be 21 year old, posting about how they're going to be a genuine adult soon and they understand how some kids on the site might find that unsettling, so if anyone they follow ever feels weirded out that such an old person follows them, never be afraid to message and ask them to unfollow. Because kids need safe spaces, and tumblr should be that space!

I was so annoyed by so much of the post I automatically unfollowed the person who shared it. I really thought better of them.

But seriously, do kids honestly thing tumblr of all places is a safe haven on the internet?
