What was the cool thing students in your school loved...

(Anonymous) 2017-05-19 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
but the teachers hated.

There was a trend for laser pointers for a while. You know, the things that people use to play with their cats?

Honestly, I wasn't a fan myself, since some kid pointed one in my eye.

There was also a fad for those squishy gray erasers. I think those kind of served the same purpose of the "slime" that kids make today - you could squish and play with it in class. I don't think the teachers really hated those, since they weren't noisy or distracting.

Slap bracelets! They ended up being banned.

I don't think there was any school where slap bracelets lasted long.

I remember they tried to scare us by saying they were super dangerous, but really it was more that they annoyed the fuck out of teachers.

Everyone setting their digital watch alarm to go off at the exact same time. That was when we all still thought digital watches were a pretty neat idea.

Yu-Gi-Oh cards because they "encouraged gambling" and were from "the devil". They got banned.

Do you mean that's why students loved them, or that's why teachers hated them?

My niece's school are using fidget spinners to torment the teachers, word is that the PTA is going request they be banned from the school at this month's meeting. The irritant factor is spinning (pardon the pun) out from just the school yard and now being used at home to irritate parents and sitters too. They gotta go.

They've been banned in my school. First just a teacher judgement call, but now that they've been classified as a choking hazard they're out.

If kids would just use them as a fidgety thing that's one thing, but they fight and bicker and compare and spar with them. It's annoying and disruptive as heck.

Pokemon cards and Tamagotchi's. The former got banned when some kids got into a scuffle over trading them and the latter were mostly fine, just the teachers would confiscate them if they saw you playing with it in class.

Yeah, these are the ones in my school. Especially Tamagotchi.

Same here, though I think the teachers at my school were just annoyed that students were too distracted by Pokemon cards to pay attention to schoolwork, haha.

Drunk sex on campus. I'm sure the teachers have loved it, but being grown up and tidying up other people's fun isn't as nice as having it yourself.

All I can remember are Pokemon and Pogs. So much so that they were banned.

Series like Goosebumps and The Babysitters Club, because we should have been reading more Newbery Award winners and other "real" books instead.

I would have thought The Animorphs and Harry Potter would have been banned from my schools, but they weren't, luckily.

It was just Pokemon. Anything Pokemon. That included the little books you could at the Bookfair. It was really stupid, imo.

Wow, that's fucked up. Kinda like banning comics because you should be reading "real books", hell the kid's still reading, it just isn't ~highbrow~ enough for some.

Wow, this one actually makes me angry. What the fuck.

As a librarian I am perhaps overtly biased toward cryingredients "Censorship!" but seriously, both of those series are great for new to intermediate readers. Bullshit on your school for banning them.

Pencil fights. Where you hold a pencil by either end and then someone tries to break it with another pencil. It was a paddlin' offense if you got caught (I'm an Olde who went to school when paddlin' was still a thing). Of course it was stupid and wasteful, but kids are like that, lol.

POGS

I was good at it. I collected a ton of poison pogs and got a lot of slammers that way. >:D
