Ridiculous local controversies

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-05-19 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any controversies in your local area that are ridiculous or unnecessary.

the controversy over changing the Alamo museum to reflect its wider history, which some people claim will ruin the site's message as a monument to "independent Texas" just makes me want to laugh and shake my head. Really. The Alamo is more than just one battle. Why shouldn't visitors get to learn about more of its history?

A while back my town had a big problem with geese. They shut down the beach (somehow we have a beach in a small town in upstate NY) because of the geese shitting everywhere and polluting the water. So then people were arguing about the best way to get rid of the geese.

The rich part of town near me had the same problem, but with seals and sea lions. I don't care, people can swim at lots of beaches around here, let the cute critters have that one. But the rich were flipping out that they didn't have their special rich people beach all to themselves anymore ans kept trying to hurt them and scare them away. Assholes.

Man, and the idiots here are encouraging the geese to roam free here. Look, it's fine if you only have to stop once a week to let them cross the road, but when it's every day in multiple areas (and I'm not even mentioning the big green turds), then I think someone needs to come up with a different plan to make the city interesting.

Someone sued last year to prevent a tramline being laid that would connect all three towns in our valley, bringing decent environmentally friendly public transport and several much needed jobs as well as bolstering tourist income, because the tramline would prevent her parking her car outside her property and she'd need to park around the corner instead. A whole 50ft away. The horror. The worst part is that the council folded and shelved the project rather than litigate.

People around here are whining, complaining and protesting against the potential building of wind turbines. By pretending it's so bad for nature and everything. It's beyond ridiculous when you think about the alternatives being nuclear and brown coal power plants.

I blame the Daily Mail for whipping up anti-windfarm hysteria in the 1990s when it was a slow news decade. Idiots have never let it go since. It has become a self-fulfilling prophecy that windfarms make people miserable because they've convinced themselves that windfarms make them miserable. Just build the bloody things. Rather than than fracking.

Birds pay for every wind farm and solar farm built. It is an issue.

This is the one thing that annoys me about Nick Xenophon in South Australia. He was on that anti-windmill kick for a while.

Just--I was born in Oklahoma. I've suffered through noise pollution of other kinds, plus ozone pollution, acid rain, earthquakes from fracking. Don't act like windmills aren't better than all that. Though of course solar farms and geothermal power are even better.

The duck ramp.

-Washington, DC

(there was a little ramp built in the mall area so floofy little ducklings could get in and out of the pool more easily. some asshole Republican politician made a big stink about how it was a waste of gov't money.)

(Anonymous) 2017-05-20 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Did it cost more than the F-35b program? Because that is a major waste of cash, but strangely one the Republicans are keen on pouring more pork into.

Man, I'm a born and raised Texan, and I'd totally love to learn more about the Alamo outside of the battle. Of course, considering how much the revolution and that particular battle are romanticized in the public mind, I'm not surprised some people are opposed.

There is no controversy. Texas belongs to Mexico, you ought to be Mexican, and y'all ought to be paying for a wall to keep you spics out.

There was a huge and ridiculous blowup when our county went from semi-dry to no longer dry. Before ABC stores could sell alcohol and grocery stores beer/wine, but restaurants weren't allowed to sell individual drinks and no bars.

People were predicting the end times. Drunks everywhere, DUIs would skyrocket, god would smite us for our immorality. The whole county would turn into a smoking boozy crater.

It passed. Applebees started serving $15 novelty martinis and beer. The world did not end. Shockingly enough, people still preferred to get their bulk alcohol cheaply from the ABC store instead of doled out by expensive mixed drink. DUIs and accidents went down because the few idiots who did think it was awesome to drive after drinking at dinner had a shorter distance between dinner and home than before, when they'd go out to neighboring counties to drink and drive home.

I find it odd that buying bulk liquor and beer to possibly consume alone at home was okay, but buying a drink to consume with food in a publc social situation was not.

There's a years-long argument as to whether or not a cable car should be built on the local mountain. Most of the arguments for run along the lines of, 'It'll attract tourists!'* or 'Sometimes the road to the top is closed, I should be able to go up every day!'** or good old 'Don't impede business and progress, you wowser!'***
I'm pretty firmly in camp Do Not, especially since the most recent flare up is from a group complaining that the city council won't approve their plans - to which the council has replied 'You haven't submitted any'. These tossers want their plans approved without even a pretense at oversight.
>:(

* Past experience with things built to attract tourists is that no, it won't.
** There are maybe three days a year when the road is closed and the weather isn't colder than a witch's tit and windy enough to take you from mountain to river direct route.
