UGH, YES.

I want to see the new movie since I love everyone else in the cast, but I feel like going and paying my $12 would be an huge insult to Amber Heard.

I'll probably just end up finding a free bootleg. :/

I mean...Johnny Depp is only one person working on a productions with dozens (if not hundreds of other people). Depp has already been paid for his work. Your dollars are not contributing to him directly.

Isn't it the opposite way around? Technical people get paid before the movie goes out, and stars get the box office bonuses should the movie be a success?

I don't think so, not necessarily. Stars will get a salary regardless of how well the movie does. Sometimes if the movie does exceptionally well, they might get a bonus on top of their salary, but by the time the movie is released, they've already been paid.

Ehhh... perhaps not directly, but make no mistake, people paying for movie tickets does benefit Depp. It shows movie studios that he's still a bankable star that can bring in box office dollars. And that has a direct impact on what projects he'll be offered, what roles he will get, what personal projects of his are greenlit, etc. Arguably, that's even an more significant contribution than merely paying his salary.
