I think most people are inclined toward goodness, but goodness can be interpreted a billion different ways. Still, people like to feel righteous and like to be the hero. Unfortunately, sometimes that means screaming at a woman wearing a hijab, donated ten thousand dollars to the NRA, picketing abortion clinics, murdering your daughter for getting pregnant outside of marriage and shaming the family, torturing gay people... etc.
Sometimes horrible things are done just to be self-serving, or because you're a sadistic asshole. But still, lots of horrible things are done because people get righteously worked up about a cause and love to be morally outraged.
