Do you think goodness is an innate quality?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-25 01:49 am (UTC)(link)But that isn't to say violent or "bad" behavior isn't innate, too. And these terms are really hard to define anyway, especially considering circumstantial issues or societal expectations. Still, I think humans are generally compelled to be helpful, to feel empathy and compassionate toward others, and uncomfortable with the suffering of others if they see it directly.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-25 02:39 am (UTC)(link)Sometimes horrible things are done just to be self-serving, or because you're a sadistic asshole. But still, lots of horrible things are done because people get righteously worked up about a cause and love to be morally outraged.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-25 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)While there are studies that prove that even terribly young babies can understand the basics of good people vs bad people, it takes time and learning to understand more complex moral situations.
Re: Do you think goodness is an innate quality?
(Anonymous) 2017-05-25 09:31 am (UTC)(link)There are very few who are brave enough to be good in the face of overwhelming adversity. I'm thinking of people like the German students who stood up against the Nazi regime - in particular the girl whose last words were defiant even as she faced a firing squad.

I'm feeling a bit cynical tonight.
