This is true and it makes me sad, because I feel like it's a valuable word for particular types of discourse. But because of how overused (and abused) it is, I basically feel like I now have to put it in scare quotes if I want to used it, even if I'm using it in a genuine way, so that people know I am aware of the issues surrounding the use of the word and hopefully don't dismiss what I'm saying as soon as they see I've used That Word.
