Overused words

(Anonymous) 2017-05-26 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Any words that are annoying you right now?

On tumblr, it's "terrifyling." Finally I figured out why it bugs me (besides overuse) - "terror" is a fairly extreme emotion, and the people who call things "terrifying" often had this attitude that if you don't agree that whatever it is is terrifying, you're wrong or you just don't understand. But I don't usually have such an extreme reaction to things, even if I don't like them or would be careful around them.

When I was a teenager, I remember "disturbing" being used a lot. I think it bugged me, but now I'd prefer it. There are plenty of things I find disturbing, but not terrifying.

Problematic. Of course.

This is true and it makes me sad, because I feel like it's a valuable word for particular types of discourse. But because of how overused (and abused) it is, I basically feel like I now have to put it in scare quotes if I want to used it, even if I'm using it in a genuine way, so that people know I am aware of the issues surrounding the use of the word and hopefully don't dismiss what I'm saying as soon as they see I've used That Word.

The only reason I hate 'boost this' is because it's mostly crowdfunding and it reminds me that most people can't afford basic healthcare and they have to beg on the internet.

On tumblr: Calling every ship with even the tiniest age difference pedophilia.

ngl I still get irritated about all the people who called Snow a pedophile for being engaged to Serah in FFXIII. Snow was 21, Serah was 18! That's young to get married, sure, but that's not pedophilia. :/

Re: Overused words

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Me too. especially because those people like will get in their minds that this ship is pedophilia and if you have any issues you're just an apologist or pedo yourself and thus the scummiest of scum deserving whatever comes to you.

I knew someone who used this tendency to get away with talking about how they wanted to physically assault people for shipping things ("but they're pedophiles"). I've become convinced that some or a good number of people on tumblr using the accusation so they can now justify being creepy levels of aggressively violent about ships they don't like without any criticism.

There are people on tumblr that misuse so many goddamn words, this is a prime example that and 'queerbaiting'. No you idiots, two male characters sharing screentime IS NOT QUEERBAITING.

I haven't seen this used in a while, but I thought of it today so it totally counts. :)

Back in the day, people would call meta "thinky thoughts" and that phrase made me want to throw a couch at them and then jump up and down on their bones.

Discourse ughh.

Especially when it's described as 'the discourse' that word just makes me so annoyed now.

It's like people trying to prop up their wank to be more important than it is.

I miss wank. Because most "discourse" is exactly that. Fandom wank.

Ephebophile.

Basically used by pedophiles or pedophile apologists who just want to try and squirm out of the pedophile label by trying to invoke a technicality.

Except there is a huge difference? I mean, one literally means pre-pubescent and one is teens? A 50 year old liking 17 year olds is still kind of skeevy but it's not fucking paedophilia and it's disingenuous to call it that.
