mobile game are unethical and need purchasing limits. gaining profit from a so called cash whales by using every psychological trick in the book is morally reprehensible.

I find it fascinating and creepy to read about the psychology tricks they use to keep people playing.

It's slightly tricky, because so much of that is basically just an intense version of what our whole contemporary capitalist system tries to do. And it's not that I think that system is necessarily moral or good. It's definitely worthy of criticism. But it seems unfair to get mad at mobile games specifically for being good at doing the thing that our entire economic system is built around doing.

I'm confused. Why is it unethical for games to charge money?

I can't be mad at them because they've given a lot of artists jobs (me included on a freelance basis) but even though I've worked on them I don't play them myself because I know the scam.

I'd only like the complain about how little I made on those games versus how much the people in charge (celebs) made.

I'm torn. On the one hand, they're definitely taking advantage of people. But on the other hand, it's the consumer's responsibility to... well, be responsible. Set spending limits for themselves. Limit their playtime to something they can handle. Whatever.

It's not Popcap's fault if you can't stop yourself from buying more shit. The game is designed to be rewarding and borderline-addictive, sure, but so is a bottle of wine. I can buy as much wine as I fucking want, and that shit'll straight up kill me. But no one woul ddream of calling a vineyard unethical for making it.

The vast majority of mobile/casual gamers aren't addicted and don't spend too much on their microtransactions. The ones who are addicted, well, the problem isn't really the game. They'd be addicted to WoW if they didn't have Candy Crush, and if they didn't have videogames at all it'd be something else.

I think the point of your existence is to consume things engineered to be addictive. Drugs, alcohol, video games. That is all you are for. But at least you give their makes money?

I've felt the pull when playing Candy Crush like, "well maybe just this ONE time?" but I've managed to avoid it.

It helps that you can actually earn a respectable amount of bonuses as you go along as long as you aren't using them every single game you play.

Of course, this means I also resolved myself to just suck it up when I hit a puzzle that takes a long time for me to finish. And by long time. I mean like weeks of playing once or twice most days.

(that said, I haven't played the game in months now. I think I reached candy oversaturation :) ).

I don't actually play any mobile games, haha. My phone is phenomenally shitty, it doesn't have the memory for them.

I've played plenty of games with micro-transactions and cash-grab DLC, though. I get the allure. I'll even buy that shit every once in a while if it's a project I like or a company I want to support.

People make it out like it's heroin or something, like "buy a power-up one time and next thing you know you'll spend ALL YOUR MONEY!" but ime it's the opposite. You buy the power up and it buys you five more minutes of fun and then it's like wow, what a fucking waste of money that was.

yeah, the actual average spending per user is in a perfectly normal range. WALES can afford to be wales. we do not need to protect wales from spending their money on frivolous things.
they also get a ridiculous amount of preferential treatment by the studios. they're not some poor sods getting ripped off, they're rich people spending the money they have too much of.
