Toxic Fandoms

What's the most toxic fandom you've ever been in? What made it so?

Star Wars

Most of my other fandoms were too tiny or fragmented to be truly toxic or to not be able to get away from it.

For SW there's the SJW-take on the ship wars and also the old-school-fanboys gatekeeping.

I really hate the gatekeeping and "[x] isn't REAL Star Wars..."

There's this one blog I read from time to time and whenever...I mean WHENEVER the prequels get brought up for some reason there's always a few comments along the lines of how terrible they were and shouldn't exist (or the people that are like, "what prequels? they only ever made three Star Wars movies until The Force Awakens..."). So frustrating. I get it guys, you have to prove how much of a Real Fan you are by shitting on the newer movies but really it just makes you look like an asshole.

As an outsider looking in, I can safely say that Star Wars is the most toxic fandom I've ever seen.

Harry Potter.

I mean, I have no regrets about being in it. But it was toxic.

Yeah, Harry Potter was just so massive and diverse too. Like those who were "grown ups" thought they were better than the younger fans, even though the books were children's books meant to be enjoyed by all. The fans could be really nasty.

I had to unfriend somebody who just got way too psycho about Harry Potter and started believing she had actual magic powers (I thought she was joking. She wasn't) and calling people muggle trash.

Firefly. The lengths that the hardcore Whedonistas would go to to shill that show and to push their faves, absolving them of the shades of gray and black Whedon put in, and to ignore Whedon's own faults as far as character plotting and not thinking implications through, it was insane. I got doxxed and SWATed by Firefly fans for not accepting it as a perfect work of art.

It is just a dumb show that had the potential to be campy fun, and a b-movie sequel. Sure it is a shame it was cut short so quickly, but FOX was doing that all the time round then. It wasn't the only show that got done like that, it certainly was no lost classic.

Harry Potter. I think Supernatural probably actually was, but I was never involved in those parts of the fandom. I was heavy into some of the toxic parts of the fandom because I shipped non-canon pairings but liked all (or most of) the books and didn't feel the need for my ships to be canon or get offended when they didn't happen.

Re: Toxic Fandoms

Bleach was simmering in its own wank and pairing wars. Also Free! (Swimming Anime) and Yuri on Ice is going that way, from the looks of it.

Steven Universe. I don't watch the show but I think it's lovely how it tries to give such positive messages. The fandom is shit. Undertale is going this route too, and there was something that happened recently that I'm trying to remember that involved more online bullying. It's like the nicest shows attract the worst kind of people.

And Kpop. Just Kpop.

An east asian undertale fanartist was given a cookie with needles in at convention apparently for shipping a certain pairing.

Add lolita to that list though I think the trend, died down some.

House fandom.

Mostly because there were one or two BNFs who bullied everyone else into seeing things their way, at least on the surface. And anyone who disagreed or wanted to interpret characters differently, even just for fun, got shamed and treated like some kind of criminal.

It was really exhausting.

Re: Toxic Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Probably Hetalia - thought I will say Hetalia's real saving grace was that since the cast was so big the fandom was super divided. It did mean that it was kind of clique-y, but that was nice in that you could just interact with fans who liked the same group of characters as you and cultivate a less toxic fandom space - but yeah as a whole it was pretty bad. Because of that whole "real world politics and racism" thing

Re: Toxic Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
People dragging in their RL political views and RL assumptions and bigotry added more layers of ugliness to the usual character stanning and ship wars.

Re: Toxic Fandoms

Supernatural fandom. And for the reasons anyone outside the fandom would guess. I got out of it early-ish and stopped watching the show in the fifth season, but I just felt really lonely and attacked for not liking what everyone else liked and for daring to like things they didn't.

It's basically dead by the double combo of Monster High and Ever After High. Surprising too , it's a toyline, but you'd be surprised how racist a lot of people were.

Re: Toxic Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
It always struck me as kinda weird how people in toy-related fandoms could be so rude and vicious. I'm kinda on the outskirts of the American Girl fandom and there are so many racists and xenophobes. Most of the fans are really nice, but man does the crazy come out in unexpected ways.

Re: Toxic Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
My Little Pony obviously because of bronies. I was never super involved in the fandom and there are some nice people in it but it generally made me super depressed to have that happen to My Little Pony because I loved it when I was young and I was initially excited to see a generation of new young girls get into it.

Re: Toxic Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
MCU and Marvel, because of the SJW-flavored ship wars and relentless policing in my corner of it, the general batshit, the endless wank over movies that no one has even seen yet and then more wank when they're released.

My corner of it is especially bad, because the policing, concern trolling and bullying come from inside the house, as it were.

Voltron. Welcome to Nightvale. Steven Universe. Star Wars. Yuri on Ice is trying its hardest to get there as well.

Bleach.

I mean I loved it, but Jesus Christ those girls were fucking warriors.

I bet somewhere out there's a 30 something veteran of the Rukia/Orihime shipwar wandering the midwest, engaging in pseudo wars with the local police Rambo style because they cant accept that its over.

The fandom I'm in right now: Uncharted fandom.

Thankfully I've made friends with some nice people, but there are a few BNF's who feel the need to push their opinions and meta on everyone and have no problem with shitting on certain ships because it's this one ship. There are also the crazy fangirls who woobify and worship the villains and have no problem with telling people to kill themselves because someone drew a character in a way that was making fun of them. I have so many people in this fandom blocked, good god.
