I agree that I don't think freeing her would've solved his issues (it's not like the Jedi were going to let her live in the Temple so...) but I feel like it might've helped mitigate them a little. Might've given Palpatine one less nail to use ("remember what you told me about your mother...") but then again the guy would've just found something else. God knows Anakin can get in enough trouble as it is.

I don't think it would've made much sense for her to become a Jedi. That's not really her path. I'd like to think she at least learned a bit more about her connection to the Force though (but I expect she would've resisted due to it coming from her father).

OH MY GOD YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE GLAD MAUL IS DEAD. I WAS SO ANNOYED WHEN THEY BROUGHT HIM BACK IN TCW TO BEGIN WITH AND THEN I HATED HOW EVERYBODY (*cough*ezra*cough*) GOT DUMB AROUND HIM IN REBELS.

I thought they did Thrawn well but I wasn't particularly invested in him. I don't think I ever actually read all of the books he was in.

I understand why they threw out the EU (trying to a sequel trilogy would've been pretty impossible if they'd kept it and it's not like they could just pick and choose what remained canon, that way would lie madness. And I would've been pissed if they'd made an ST based off the Vong. I hated the NJO). I like how they do take inspiration from some of the stuff in the old EU and bring it back and make it canon again (like Thrawn). I wish they could've done something like that with the X-wing books because those are my forever favorite Star Wars series. :)

My feeling on Shmi is that she is one slave and the Jedi would want to free all the slaves. By freeing her, they are choosing the one over the many, which isn't what Jedi should do. It just reinforces Anakin's issues of black-and-white thinking, and putting those he cares for above the general good of the galaxy. And, also, by not freeing her, there's an example of the Force providing as she was freed anyway and married a good man and had a good family without intervention by the Jedi. I just think fandom gets way too hung up on the fact that it's so obvious that she should be freed, but that's not the political realities of being a Jedi, and it's also counter to their teachings, but that doesn't mean they don't care and wouldn't want to free her. But it can't just be her and not everyone else.

For Thrawn, the fanboys who watch Rebels (not the kids the show is actually geared towards) have been whining all season about how he doesn't do anything. They wanted him so badly to be canon and they got exactly what he was - a patient tactician - but it wasn't fast enough for them. I don't think they have any idea what they really want. I thought Disney did a great job of bringing Thrawn into Rebels and being true to his character.

Oh yeah, from a political perspective, just freeing her would be a non-starter. After all, Qui-Gon wasn't going to free Anakin if he hadn't turned out to be super Force-sensitive and even then he didn't just say, "hey you're free now" he did it within the rules of the slave-owning culture in Mos Espa: won him from Watto. I mean okay...he cheated, but I think that's more of a guideline anyway.

What did they want Thrawn to do? He's a freaking high military officer. He's not going to go out and physically smack down people (though we did end up seeing some of that, you're welcome Kallus). Sure, Vader does it but he's Vader. That's his job.

Even more than that, he couldn't go back for her, which is what a lot of fandom thinks he should've done (or that Padme would've done) after Naboo.

For Thrawn, they wanted him to stop letting the Rebels getting away. But, it was clear he was studying them. Everyone just needed to be patient as his plans unfolded. In the end, he discovered the mole and would've succeeded if Konstantine hadn't been an idiot and the Bednu wasn't there. He couldn't have planned for the Bendu, and he had the Rebels at gunpoint before Bendu attacked. Thrawn's patience allowed him to seriously cripple the Rebels, rather than just take out the Ghost crew. But, the fanboys are still whining about how slow it was and they don't think his victory was decisive enough.

I'd like to think Padme might have or at least wished she could have. We've seen that she pursued social causes but again...she would've wanted to free all of them. And Tatooine was technically not part of the Republic and she was the representative of another planetary government. Just rolling in and taking all the slaves (a major part of the planet's industry) or trying to 'free' them is a good way to invite a war. And how would she ensure they remained free after?

So yeah, there's no real good way to free all the slaves without basically wiping out the slavers and installing a new government/ruling class. Good luck with that.

Gosh, that battle at the end of the season was epic. They really did have the Rebellion on the ropes. Like, if you didn't know that some of them had to survive and that they were protected by plot armor it was easy to actually get concerned they'd not make it.

Hell, it's likely why the Rebellion is so diminished when we see them in Rogue One. The Empire came within a hairs-breadth of wiping them all out right there. Of course, they succeeded in getting the plans out and then a magical farmboy from the backwoods showed up to blow the first Death Star to smithereens and help reunite the Alliance again. I suspect if that hadn't happened, even if the Rebels had managed to escape Yavin without all of them blowing up (like if Luke had never left Tatooine), the Alliance would've just...drifted apart and not coalesced again for who-knows-how-long. Maybe not until the Emperor finally kicked the bucket and the various Imperial leaders started fighting over who would take over.

I think about this shit too much.
