Yuuuuuppp

anime is occasionally good, and some anime fans are really cool, but anime fandoms basically are never good

If you can avoid the ones where the psycho aspergers fan has taken over and is spamming every discussion with their one true interpretation, like Antvasima did on Ranma forums a while back, then you are okay. Just they seem to attract the psycho asperger fans even faster than SciFi fandoms do.

Pretty much this. I stay the fuck away from anime fandom as a rule.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I've been in great anime fandoms, but it really depends? Back in the LJ days, I was in several anime fandoms that had great discussion-based communities. Really different from the shitty meme-spam and whining that happens now. Of course there are always stupid pockets, but I miss the discussion-based format, it really drew in a more thoughtful and mature crowd at times.

I have always been more of a video game girl myself but there are some anime that I really do love-- and though I had thought that I had outgrown anime, Yuri on Ice!! really reminded me that sometimes it can be fun-- but yes, I think Tumblr fandom for it would confuse me.

Luckily though [community profile] yurionicefans is a wonderful DW community with a lot of really down to earth members, so if you have a DW anon, I would suggest you check it out!

And seriously I am a 37 year old geek, so my patience for fandoms is very very low-- I love enthusing about things but I have grown to old to put up with drama and negativity in fandoms (and I think that Tumblr can be rift with it)

Yep! Or even personal fandom journals, as someone who posts pretty regularly on her journal but often forgets communities, haha.

imo the best way to enjoy anime fandoms is to enjoy the fanart. discussion and the fanfic is rarely worthwhile.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
also doesn't help that yoi is the fujoshi flavor of the month as those rarely turn out well. i've personally had a lot more luck with smaller anime fandoms.

tbh i can't think of a single good one in recent memory (osomatsu-san, free!, attack on titan)

Dude, YOI is one of the best-selling anime of 2016, and it's still holding strong this year too. Whether or not you think it's any good is one thing, but on an objective level, this anime is far from a flash in the pan. Plus there's all the stuff about real-life skaters who presumably aren't fujoshi or even anime fans at all loving it too. It's not just for fangirls, and it's not just a brief fling.

As for the quality of the fandom, eh, depends where you look. Every big fandom has its problems. Personally, I've read a lot of great fic and met a lot of perfectly nice people. I've never had a better reception for my own fic, either. Small fandoms have their appeal, but sometimes it's encouraging to get real response to your work, right?

What in the world does "fujoshi flavor of the month" even mean? is that some term you just coined? lmao this show has been popular since like last September, and continues to dominate sales charts. Are you saying it's a popular yaoi series? like oookay but what's with the implication that it's some brief fad or something lol

Non-anime fandom is not any better tbh.

This seems like almost every fandom atm tbh.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
True dat.

Fandom itself is fucking toxic right now.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
This is me. This fandom is crazy, and I say this coming from Kpop fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm lucky that one of my best friends is into YOI and we can geek out together, but it feels a little lonely when I'm the only one in my circle friends who likes something. I kinda tried getting back into the anime fandom, but I feel too old for all the drama.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the fandom like? Saw a few comments in the Toxic Fandom thread the other day reference YOI, but no deets.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Big parts of it are pretty chill but there's a persistent group who try to dress up shipping a 15/16 year old with an 18 year old as pedophila and try to harass people about it. They recently had a meltdown because previews for the new movie were very fanservicy for those two.

I'm not all that involved in the fandom but I do know there is discourse with certain fans thinking Yuri is bisexual because they think it diminishes his relationship with Viktor or something.

Also the Vikturi shippers hate Yurio and the fact he's shipped with Otabek. They call shippers pedophiles even though Yurio is 15 and Otabek is 18. That is the most harmless age gap ever yet it fucking drives the SJW's insane.

Oh god I know how you feel. My main fandom is an anime videogame fandom and pretty much all the fanfiction authors write like they've never opened a novel in their lives, it sucks.
I really enjoyed YoI but the tumblr fandom killed it for me. I was just constantly bombarded by people weeping over any fanart of them, no matter how lame or terrible, and it just got irritating.

[personal profile] rainbowserenity 2017-05-27 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There's definitely some non-teenaged/crazy people in the fandom, but they seem to be few and far between. But I feel like I'm on the same page, that I'm getting too old for anime fandoms - I feel like typically, I just find a cluster or people that aren't crazy and stick with them. Seems to work for me, at least!

Tumblr is especially annoying with their repetitive unfunny fandom memes that they have to put in every single unrelated tag and acting like they are filthy sinners if they ship a m/m pairing.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Back when the show was airing, you got a lot of that in the IRC chat (#yurionice at irchighway). It's an old medium but that meant an older group of fans wanting a place to chat and get into these meaty discussions. I'm not sure if it's still active but maybe give it a try?

Or find people you want to engage with in fandom (plenty write great meta) and send an ask to start a convo!

That's pretty understandable and I kinda feel the same way. Also sad to see that even if people create dw communities, they seem pretty dead most of the time.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is annoying, f_ffa less so. You can have actual discussions there.
