Re: Vent thread

Over the last three weeks or so I've posted a few chapters of a 50k+ fic in my (relatively) small fandom. So far I've received 6 (anon) kudos, which is about average for said fandom over that amount of time.

Someone else has just posted a 1k oneshot, same pairing, and has already got 4 (anon) kudos. It's not badly written, but there are a lot of SPAG issues and it's a bit unoriginal/trite. I'm always grateful for new fic, and am genuinely pleased that someone else is enjoying writing my OTP, and I'm not even THAT bitter that she's got over half my kudos in no time at all... (I am a bit, obvs.)

But I feel all disillusioned now, like mine just isn't that good. I thought it was, and I was quite proud of it. I'm hoping it's just because it's long, and people prefer oneshots...

Is the long fic finished? Many people are less likely to read an uncompleted long story because there is a very good chance an author won't finish it.

It is finished, but technically a WIP because I'm still editing it (a few chapters ahead of myself, IYSWIM). But I get that...

Maybe I should put a note on it saying that it's actually all written.

I think length could be part of it, yes.

People seem to read a lot of fic on their phones, in short bursts on the bus or train or in class. They finish it, they kudo, because comments are a hassle to tap out.

Yeah, I understand that, and I'm guilty of it myself!

It could also be that yours is a WIP. A lot of people only read finished stories.

Yeah. I love long fic, but I'm going to hold any comments or kudossing until it is finished. I'm certainly not going to read anything under 15k words though. There isn't enough room in those for a story.

Keep telling your story OP, they will come. And when they do it will be quality feedback, not kids on crack type feedback.

OP

True, true. It's currently at just over 12k, there's a lot more to go. Although it IS finished, just in the editing stages.

Keep telling your story OP, they will come.
I will. Thank you <3

Maybe the length of yours is daunting to people. Everyone has time to read 1,000 words, but 50k is a commitment.

I suppose that's probably it. That's what I hope anyway, rather than my writing being the actual problem!

Kids are dumb and write dumb stuff that dumb kids read because their attention spans are too shor.... Lets ride bikes!

Haha, very true.

I don't kudos until the fic is done, unless it's an old fic and it's clear it probably will never be updated again. I wouldn't worry, anon.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's true. I will definitely finish posting, I've only got a few chapters left to edit and really want to get it out there. Maybe once it's done I'll get an influx!

Sometimes I put off reading longer fics that I know will probably be good if not at least competently written, just because... well, they are long and I don't know if I want to commit myself to that right now.

But 1000 words? I can read that on my phone while waiting at the dentist, so yeah. It is what it is.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's true. I have a 3yo and don't always have the time to settle down and read a long fic. Life does tend to get in the way, sometimes.

That's sort of why I'm posting it in small(ish) chapters, on a regular schedule. It's complete so I could've finished editing and posted it in one go.

I'm sorry to say, but 'trite' also means 'easy, and of a theme some readers are already very fond of'. It's always going to pull kudos.

This Story Is Not Their Kink And That’s Okay is a mantra I've found helpful when something I write isn't too popular. (Still bites about the lack of kudos, though.)

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no problem with that at all, really. Like I said, I'm just pleased there are still people posting stuff!

I think it's just because this fic is sort of my baby, y'know? I've been working on it for a few years, now. It's taken me a long time to work up the courage to post it, and of course now the fandom is dwindling...

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Like others have said, it's possible that people are holding off reading it until it's done. I used to be a staunch 'won't read WIP's' just because I was tired of getting involved in fic that wouldn't get completed. (I've since then broken my own rule, ahaha.) Plus, some people just happen to prefer one-shots to chaptered fic.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I generally I prefer oneshots (reading and writing), if I'm honest. Especially if they're not so well written. I love a multi-chaptered epic if it's really good, though. Maybe I thought mine was better than it is!
