nayrt - It'd be sexist to imply that she "neatened" him up simply because she's a woman, but a guy taking extra pains with his appearance because he has a crush on her isn't particularly sexist?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It is true though that women have a lower tolerance for scruffiness than men do. Even transwomen are guaranteed to neaten a guy and a place up long before a man will. There is a reason that the old joke is that if you can't afford a cleaner then get a girlfriend. It happens.

I understand those are stereotypes, yes. I don't know that they're a universal truth. I don't think they are.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You'll find the odd exception, true, but generally by and large women just like things cleaner than men do. As soon as she was aboard the Milano she was probably cleaning raccoon fur off the upholstery and telling Quill he needed a hair cut. Probably kept straightening all the pictures and hid the booze too.

Gamora doesn't strike me as someone who'd have the patience or time for cleaning. And not every woman even notices a mess.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I said there are a few exceptions, but yeah apart from them all women do.

The fact that you think that the phrase "all women do" something, even allowing for a few exceptions, says there isn't much point to discussing this with you. I just fundamentally disagree with that concept.

I think this person is a troll, or completely oblivious.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh good grief. First of all, women are usually conditioned to be neater from a young age. It's a cultural thing, not at all some kind of universal biological truth that women LIKE things cleaner (speaking from personal experience, I could give a fuck about tidiness). And because of that, there's no reason to expect Gamora, who was clearly not raised with the same kind of gender role expectations or even social skills as many of the rest of us were, to have any opinions whatsoever about raccoon fur or Quill's sideburns.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh...no? I prefer it when my boyfriend is scruffy and unshaved to when he "neatens up". Also I'm kind of a slob around the house while my boyfriend goes the extra mile when cleaning.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Original anon - sure, it's sexist. It implies that the only reason he would care about his appearance is because of a woman. That's offensive to both of them, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Because men are never vain around women?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't say that. I said I personally find it sexist to suggest that of course Quill has been "neatened" up because there's a woman on board, even if the implication is that he did it himself to seduce her (personally I suspect the other interpretation to be the correct one, but I wanted to give...the benefit? of the doubt). Surely that's the only logical leap rather than, say, that the behind the scenes people went for a new look for a new movie.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The behind-the-scenes reason and the in-universe reason are two seperate things and both can be correct.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, but that's assuming any guesses for either reason are "correct" - they're guesses. And some of them are pretty damned offensive, such as assuming that Gamora would care at all about how Quill's hair looked or that a man would only change his appearance because of a women he liked.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, wow, okay.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, wow, it's almost like people can have different opinions and interpretations of things, and have experienced sexism differently.
