Re: How do you read fanfic?

I read on a PC. I look for pairings/characters that grabbed me when I consumed the canon. It depends on the canon, though, where I go from there. If I get into a canon late (like LOST for example), I want to read something that doesn't reference stuff I haven't gotten to yet, so dates or tagging can be important. If I came away from a canon really interested in a particular event, I might look for episode tags or anything that sounds like it dealt with that event.

But I'm mostly a shipper, so I usually search by pairing. I only read completed fic unless I'm truly desperate and I filter out WIPs so I don't even see them. I do look at word length, as I like stories more than PWPs. Rating is also important, but it depends on what mood I'm in what rating I'm looking for.

Also, if the fandom is tiny, I'm more likely to check out everything. I like gen stories but they have to hit the right buttons and if the fandom's too large I don't have the patience to read through every summary to find a few gems. I have better luck in medium to small fandoms. But, I also do this after I've looked for the pairings/characters I'm interested in.
