How do you read fanfic?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-27 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Mobile or PC or Tablet? How do you approach fanfic in a new fandom? Go by date? Kudos? Word length? Do you read the fandom as a whole or stick to a character/pairing?

Phone when I'm going to bed or when I'm in the car. PC when I'm at home.

I look for fic based on the pairing(s) I'm interested in, then I start reading from the first page because earlier fics are usually the best ones. They're the gut reaction fics. Like, it was written when someone got home from the movie or after the first few episodes aired. The earlier ones are often also truer to character/less OOC.

PC most of the time but I use my kindle in bed. I pick a character or pairing to focus on (because I always latch onto some character or another). I read from the most recent completed fics and go backwards. So I don't miss anything when new fics are added. I usually read through all the fics a second time with lower standards once I run out of fic. :P

PC or tablet depending on if I'm in bed or not and I just go into the pairing tag I'm interested in, click on 'complete works' and read through whatever catches my eye.

It might not be the most efficient way but it's how I like to do it.

Laptop. I select the "without romance" category, exclude the creeper pairings, exclude the OC character, then I just read the summaries until I find one I want to read or I get bored of clicking through page after page of untagged slash, OCs, and creeper pairings which are still included because the author thought if they didn't tag then I'd surely read if they just shoved them in my face enough.

I read on a PC. I look for pairings/characters that grabbed me when I consumed the canon. It depends on the canon, though, where I go from there. If I get into a canon late (like LOST for example), I want to read something that doesn't reference stuff I haven't gotten to yet, so dates or tagging can be important. If I came away from a canon really interested in a particular event, I might look for episode tags or anything that sounds like it dealt with that event.

But I'm mostly a shipper, so I usually search by pairing. I only read completed fic unless I'm truly desperate and I filter out WIPs so I don't even see them. I do look at word length, as I like stories more than PWPs. Rating is also important, but it depends on what mood I'm in what rating I'm looking for.

Also, if the fandom is tiny, I'm more likely to check out everything. I like gen stories but they have to hit the right buttons and if the fandom's too large I don't have the patience to read through every summary to find a few gems. I have better luck in medium to small fandoms. But, I also do this after I've looked for the pairings/characters I'm interested in.

Mac or Kindle. I go by ship or character or whatever, depending on what i'm looking for. Then I go by kudos if it is a big fandom with a lot of fics.

Laptop. If I'm in the middle of a longfic I'll send a link to my phone to read, sometimes.

If it's a big fandom: Filter by OTP, then filter by Bookmarks, then I start reading from the top (skipping stuff that's obviously squicky or triggery)

If it's a small fandom: Same as above, but after I've read all my OTP stuff I'll go through and read everything else.

PC or sometimes on my Wii U in bed. I stick to the pairing(s) I like and go by the plot description/tags. I do a quick quality control scan and if it isn't up par, I back out and move on to the next.

If the pairing I'm into is the secondary pairing, I use the Find tool to search out one of the character's name and just read the bits with them.

Usually on my PC, but I'll read it on my phone if it's something I'm really looking forward to.

When it's a new fandom I usually sort by pairing and go from there. I don't usually pay attention to kudos, comments or word length, I guess I just start from the top and go down. And I usually stick to a pairing, although sometimes I will read through what's in the fandom tag.

I read fic on my laptop, and very rarely on my phone.

I haven't gotten into the fic portion of a new fandom in a long while, but when searching for fic in general, I search AO3 for whatever trope I'm looking to read & hope I find some written for pairings I love.

...Okay, so I end up spending more time looking for fic than actually reading it because, save the rare exception, my pairings don't hail from the 10 top monster fandoms that are the biggest results in any given "search tag, search most popular relationships" filter.

If I'm lucky, with one hand down my pants.

Because I like my desktop PC, I do most things on it. I did read fic on my tablet while I was in Tasmania, but I find working with a tablet awkward. I don't have a phone that would allow me to read on - I figure that if I find tablets awkward, I'd find smartphones bloody annoying, plus it does keep my phonebill low.

I start reading new fandoms either because I am intrigued by a pairing or because I'm so enamoured of an author's writing that I'll read anything they'be written.

In big, modern fandoms I usually start with ao3. I filter by kudos then base my reading choices on ratio of hits/kudos and summary. If I find a good author I will read all of their stuff.

In small modern fandoms I'm much less picky and wI'll pretty much read anything that sounds like a good premise.

Older fandoms that are no longer active I tend to use old LJ and dreamwidth rec sites to find fic. Once I find a recce whose tastes align with mine, I'll read everything they suggest.

Very old vintage fandom I look for recs and occasionally uploaded zines.
