There was literally no narrative reason to give Lexa a tan, nor was it ever referenced on the show. The fact that the makeup was way, way darker than Alycia Debnam-Carey's actual skin tone (given all the racial problems The 100 had/has) which led people to label it "brownface" is not surprising nor unwarranted at all.

Why wouldn't a someone in a post-apocalyptic world who presumably spends most of their time outdoors be tanned?

Lexa's the leader. She spent most of her time indoors.

SHE LIVES IN THE WILDERNESS.
SHE SPENDS THE BULK OF HER TIME OUTSIDE.
SHE DOES NOT CARRY A PARASOL.
WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THINK SHE SHOULD LOOK LIKE.

Did you miss the fact that Lexa lives indoors (in a castle, no less) and has most of her scenes indoors, or...?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
And of course that means she never ever leaves. No, you need at least 20 "running around outside" montages before you can give a character a tan!

Strangely, even though everyone was outdoors much more than the Commander, no one else in Trikru got a tan.

Emori is dark-skinned as well, Bee tee dubs. Oh, and her actor's a tad bit whiter.

The actress who plays Emori is actually a WOC, unlike Alycia Debnam-Carey. And Emori lives in the desert, not a forest like Trikru.

Still, the point stands. Grounders are exposed to sunlight *GASP*
