Detoxing

(Anonymous) 2017-05-28 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Everything critical I seem to read about it seems to point it being a pseudoscience and most pro-detoxing stuff I read isn't specific on the toxins supposedly everywhere, but the basic tenets seems reasonable enough (exercise, eat healthy, keep your gut flora healthy, avoid excess sugar, avoid stress, and so on) so my question is why is the average american fat, unhappy, and stressed?

What do you mean?

You seem to be under the assumption that just because some study is out there, that everyone knows about it and is willing and able to follow it with no hurdles.

Dunno about everyone else, but not enough time to cook (at least I know how, not everyone does), not enough time to sleep or relax, I eat my feelings by trying to eat a package of oreos in a sitting, and I try and avoid stress but it's like someone trying to avoid death by hiding in a bunker with no air vents. Stress always finds me. Also I think the basic "eat less junk, exercise more, don't stress so much" stuff is great advice but sometimes hard to follow. I did walk nine miles yesterday while dealing with a bunch of stressful shit, so at least I exercise. My knees would thank me if I weighed thirty pounds or so less, though.

Short answer: stress. Fat and unhappy just follows it.

Long answer: when you're too stressed to properly take care of yourself, because stress is literally unavoidable unless you're so rich that you don't have to work/have freedom to travel/can do whatever you like/etc., then the last thing you want to hear from anyone is that if you just "kept your gut flora healthy" then everything would be fine. Stress pushes people to comfort foods, which are high in sugar/excess fats. Stress pushes people to say "fuck it" and go relax on the couch instead of expending any more energy in exercise. And when you're in that position, people whining about "toxins" sounds like some ultra-pampered-yoga-pants-and-PSLs white girl bullshit.

Most people these days think that cooking from scratch is some horribly difficult, time-consuming task. You wouldn't believe how many people I've encountered who don't even know how to do basic shit like scramble eggs or make simple stir-fry because they think it's "too hard."

Because most of us are one illness or layoff away from utter financial ruin.

Your question doesn't really make any sense? Detoxing isn't just about "exercise, eat healthy, keep your gut flora healthy, avoid excess sugar, avoid stress", it claims that your body builds up "toxins" that can and should be flushed out, usually by drinking stupid teas or other mixtures. There's no scientific basis for believing that maple syrup, cayenne and lemon juice can rid your body of "toxins". It's a scam. THAT'S what people are objecting to when they call it a pseudoscience.

As to why is the average american fat, unhappy, and stressed... probably a combination of many factors, including but not limited to:

* limited income
* limited time
* limited knowledge of cooking skills
* high availability of cheap processed foods and junk foods that appeal to people with little money, time and cooking know how

Nothing to do with detoxing.

Working out, eating good and avoiding stress are all good, but it doesn't "clear your body of toxins" and a lot of other stuff detoxes suggest (I've seen some recommend daily saunas, fasting, putting jade up your vagina, etc etc) are useless at best and dangerous at worse. You can promote good diet and exercise without making up fake toxins.

As for Americans being unhealthy- I would say that is a result of our culture and not vague "toxins"

"Putting jade up your vagina" sounds like a very fancy euphemism for a dildo.

I wish lmao (it's one of Gwenyth Paltow's weird things)

The "toxins" that need to be "flushed out" is pseudoscience.

Eating healthy, avoiding excess sugars, and exercising isn't, but that's also not what "detoxing" refers to.

the definition of fat has changed. You are now slapped with the label "obese" if you're LESS THAN 30 POUNDS OVERWEIGHT.

So, I'm not American but I'very recently started a job which is mostly sedentary. Despite my diet and other exercise levels not changing, this sudden increase in sitting down for 9 hours a day has made me put on weight, sleep less well, feel unhappy all the time and has pushed my stress levels through the roof. I also have zero energy all the time.

Anecdotal, but I find the changes significant.
