I'd have David Tennant as Gendo Ikari from "Neon Genesis Evangelion", because what could make Gendo Ikari creepy enough for live action would be for him to be a white guy who in-universe decided to appropriate all sorts of Japanese culture to prove his love for Yui. Gendo's whole thing is he's a creepy weirdo who never knows where the line is on anything, so just making it creepier by having him be a westerner who changed his name and started pretending to be Japanese would just take it to the next level. Lets see the SJWs work out how to scream about that one.

And it would help ease mainstream western audiences into it by having a westerner lead actor. Probably recast maybe Kaji as an African American, he's the closest thing there is to a real hero in that franchise, and maybe Maya as hispanic because that can be a hispanic name too.

TBH I (and I think most people) would rather they reset it to America if you're going to cast people like David Tennant

and TBH I think that would work

I think the Japanese setting is pretty much integral to the point of the series, and keeping all the rest of the cast Japanese (or mixed race for Shinji, because obviously if David is his dad now he has to mixed race to be even more of an outcast and a misfits if he is raised within Japanese society unlike Asuka) avoids the Ghost in the Shell accusations of whitewashing. It makes this future both weirder and more scary to Americans if they are not central to it.

I mean, I guess the obvious answer is, just don't make an American version of the thing if the Japanese setting is that integral to the point of the series

It is not an either/or proposition. Especially with Evangelion.

Yes!

The SJW fallout alone would make it worth my while. Genius.
