143- So what if it had aliens? People act like that's less plausible than the plots of the first three movies. Indiana Jones has ALWAYS had crazy implausible plots.

NS3- I think that a fan of the original canon has every right to hate a poor adaptation and to say that they can't is imho, positively ridiculous. I think the FMA anime is bad. It takes great characters and great plot ideas and doesn't begin to explore their potential, and the writing is sloppy and nonsensical near the end. The last ten episodes seem to rely purely on an obnoxious "omg what random crap can we pull from nowhere!" mentality. They're both separate canons (anime canon and manga canon), but they are not equally canon. Arakawa's world, Arakawa's characters. You can write and be a fan of the anime canon and that's fine but in no way is it on equal ground with the manga. And in no way should I have to like what I see as an extremely bad adaptation because I like the manga. And in no way am I an "elitist" for not liking the anime. I mean I watched the anime long before I read the manga anyway.

Seriously, how are aliens less believable than that Nazi face-melting bit? All four films were centered on religious artifacts.

143) For me it's not that I thought aliens are less plausible than the other Indy plots (they are all pretty much out there). It's more that I didn't think aliens fit in the context of an Indiana Jones movie. Although I still enjoyed the movie just for other things not the plot.

The problem with it wasn't the plausibility. Far from it. The problem was that sci-fi elements just don't belong in an Indiana Jones film.

Um. Why not? Is there a rule or something? I mean I could understand it if there were no unrealistic aspects before, but it's just another variant on the "religious artifacts go AWOL" theme throughout all of the movies. I mean to each his own and of course you can hate the movie if you want, but I... just don't see the big problem with aliens.

Again, the problem with it has nothing to do with how realistic or unrealistic it was. The problem was how, until now, the supernatural elements used in the Indiana Jones films were purely fantasy-based. Now, I don't know about you, but I'm not one for change in my favorite movie formulas, so the sudden introduction of the sci-fi-based supernatural elements at the film's climax felt both rushed and horribly out of place to me.

(For the record, I loved the film, and the aliens were my only gripe about it.)

religion =/= fantasy. all the films were about religious relics, not fairies and unicorns.

IAWTC. I liked the fourth film, but I thought it had more flaws than just the aliens (like the fact it didn't quite take you along for the ride like the other films did). And while I can appreciate the reason for the rather extreme difference between the fourth film and all the others (time period, stylistic choices, etc), I can't ignore that difference either. First three films? Based on 1930's films where ancient archaeological relics have mysterious powers, all sprouting from some religious/magical/whatever background. This one? Based on 1950's films, where powers are granted by super-advanced aliens. No magic, no mystical powers. Just...super-advanced technology (guess I could give it benefit of the doubt and say maybe they were mystical powers in the aliens' culture...)

Again, I acknowledge why they did it, and in its own way, it's following the Indy formula to a tee. But I know one thing. First three films appealed to the archaeologist and fantasy-freak in me. Fourth film? Was just kinda fun to watch.

(to play Devil's Advocate, the fourth film did say they weren't space aliens...so I guess that was kinda mollifying....kinda...)

Um. But you are aware there are several archaeologists and historians who theorize that ancient cultures were actually worshiping aliens, right?

It was the same director as the (equally shit-tastic) animated adaptation of Shaman King. The instant I saw his name, I realized I'd be better off sticking to the manga.

In other words? AMEN. PREACH IT.

I feel like the OP was close...what they should have said was that fans of the manga shouldn't hate fans of the anime. There are those of us who like the anime canon for whatever reason and we get trashed on for it. That is what's silly.
