I can completely sympathize with the complaint that Serial is too influential.

At the same time, "ending episodes on cliffhangers" seems like kind of an odd choice for a specific thing to criticize. Isn't that just... the nature of serial storytelling? Things end on cliffhangers?

Not exactly a novel way of doing things, serials have done this since their inception.

Gosh, how will Flash Gordon escape *this* time?!

I was about to say, has this person never watched a TV series in their life?

I feel like the cliffhanger thing is inevitable given that it's a serialized show, and while I get that it's annoying, I don't think Serial pioneered it. It's just a natural development over time - listen to really old radio shows and you'll hear the same devices, meant to get people to tune in next time, etc. Ditto TV, whether it's the news ("More at 11!") or cliffhangers as season finales.

Mmm, don't know the podcast, but if the cliffhanger is "I have information but you have to wait to hear it" every single time, I can see how that would get irritating. (Sometimes if the information is story-changing enough, telling the audience and letting them mull over it until next time can be just as effective.)
