I feel like the cliffhanger thing is inevitable given that it's a serialized show, and while I get that it's annoying, I don't think Serial pioneered it. It's just a natural development over time - listen to really old radio shows and you'll hear the same devices, meant to get people to tune in next time, etc. Ditto TV, whether it's the news ("More at 11!") or cliffhangers as season finales.
