Rant thread

Post 'em if you got 'em!

No, random parking lot dude, I'm not gonna "smile!" when you say to, because a) no one tells guys to "smile!" and b) I just visited my mom, who's on hospice care, maybe running a fever, and starting to hallucinate. The only things that might induce me to smile these days are Trump (and Pence) being impeached, and punching guys who tell me to smile.

I know exactly how you feel. What IS those guys' problem?

Re: Rant thread

(Anonymous) 2017-05-31 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. Yeah, that'd piss me off, too.

I'm sorry about your mom.

Fuck him.

Re: Rant thread

(Anonymous) 2017-05-31 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
This is why (well, one reason) I hate "smile!" Sometimes people have good reason to ne upset and being all "Turn that frown upside-down!" doesn't fix a loved one dying or a cancer diagnosis. People have a right to be sad about things sometimes. It's just a really rude thing to day to a stranger whose situation you don't know.

Re: Rant thread

(Anonymous) 2017-05-31 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
OP of "fuck smiling" thread here--yeah, I have resting bitchface and even when my life didn't suck rancid donkey balls, being told to "smile!" pissed me off. Now I'm torn between the aforementioned punching, or bursting into floods of tears and possibly choking out "m-my-muh my mom's dying, you bastard!" and then punching them. I've never in my whole life told anyone to smile except maybe for a camera, and even then I wouldn't have harangued anyone, much less a stranger, for not smiling. Sometimes people have to deal with shit where smiling is a fucking inappropriate response, dammit.

I really hate the idea that I'd be pushing for you to utilize your real pain in such a way, but it feels like making a guy feel responsible for some kind of epic sobbing makedown over something so unarguably godawful, might knock a few empathy/think twice points into his skull for the future.

Someone I thought I had a good online friendship with has unfriended me without saying why, I can't think of anything I might have done but my anxiety is happy to come up with a zillion reasons. Maybe it was a mistake? I sent a friendly message and they haven't replied.

Re: Rant thread

(Anonymous) 2017-05-31 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, I hate when that happens. I wouldn't assume it's anything you've done wrong, though. People can have lots of reasons for doing those things. Also, if you messaged them on LJ or DW, it's possible they don't get notifications... and on Facebook messages from non-friends are hidden.

Re: Rant thread

(Anonymous) 2017-05-31 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
It was on tumblr messenger. If they don't respond I will let it go, but it still sucks. I have a lot of anxiety that people who are friendly to me secretly hate me so anytime it actually comes true it causes a pretty bad backslide.

I had someone flat out break off a friendship by telling me they hadn't actually liked me for a while and had been hoping I'd give up on the friendship so they wouldn't have to tell me, while they'd been actively making plans with me and insisting everything was good the few times I asked. That one left me in a mess for almost a year.

Drivers. When it is pouring rain and the roads are flooded, that is the time to go less than the speed limit, not more. And it is the time to be more careful and not pass in the crazy manner you usually do.

Also, to whoever put in the road detour, please put up a sign. When there is no sign and people don't know they have to turn off the road until right when they get there, it creates a bottleneck as everyone switches lanes. Also, making a detour away from a crossing with a light to one without a light is perhaps not the smartest thing? There were other options.

Good lord, YES, this. I see this happen when it's snowing, too. When my family lived in Colorado, I remember hearing about tons of accidents on I-70 in the wintertime because people, for some inane reason, thought they could keep on driving like normal in the midst of a blinding snowstorm. Yeah, no, that's why your car's now in a ditch, genius.

I think my sister induced an early fake period for me. The cramps and gross feelings of a period with no actual blood. :( Super fucking annoying.

Women can do this to each other?

How?!?!

Why have I never heard of weaponized PMS?

If it was truly properly weaponized, we'd figure out how to do it to men.

Menstrual synchrony, bro. Nobody knows how it works, if it works, or why.

Stress.

Ugh

(Anonymous) 2017-05-31 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Last Saturday I had a booth at a local Memorial Day Celebration. I was told that they were expecting over 5,000 people to attend. It was advertised in the local newspaper, various local Facebook groups, on the radio, and there were posters up around town.

I was selling stars and flowers I made out of fabric or grosgrain ribbon. I turned them into lapel pins, hair clips/barrettes, magnets, and patches to put on tote bags. The small flowers were $2, large were $3, ribbon flower barrettes were $5, and the giant sunflower ribbon barrettes were $10. I also bought twisting balloons ($1), plus temporary tattoos & glow sticks ($0.25 each). I was under charging too, the $5 barrette would easily go for $25 on Etsy, but I don't have a camera right now so I can't list it there.

I had a few people pick up the flowers, tell me they were cute, put them down, and leave. A couple asked I made them myself. One woman said I was charging too much and offered to pay me $3 for the giant sunflower barrette, saying that at least I would get something. I told her as politely as I could that the prices were firm (the ornate button in the center was $5 alone)

I was there from 6 AM to 7 PM and only made $11. I sold one ribbon Barrette, two small flower hair clips, and two balloons. There were a lot of people, but it was like they only came for the free hot dogs and then left. It alsodidn't help that a woman aggressively selling homemade eggrolls was across from me (we were outside the side entrance to the main building). When she wasn't yelling at the people to buy her food, she was yelling insults at the woman helping her. People would rush by to get away from her. I couldn't move to another spot.

I am just so frustrated.

Sorry anon, that sucks. At least you still have your merch and when you can photograph it you can list it on etsy or wherever? Good luck.

Re: Ugh

(Anonymous) 2017-05-31 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that sucks. Selling things can be rough. But don't give up hope, try selling them somewhere else!

Re: Ugh

(Anonymous) 2017-05-31 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That really sucks, but please don't get too discouraged. Stuff like that is really luck based. You might see if your local library does artist displays or show weekends and see if your stuff does better at a smaller show? Sadly sometimes it's frustrating that people claim to want high quality handmade, but buy cheap overseas crap. (Same as everyone complains about wanting more original art vs. fanart, or more X pairing instead of Y pairing, but is rarely willing to put their time/money where their mouth is )

Re: Ugh

(Anonymous) 2017-05-31 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That sucks! It sounds like mostly a combo of bad luck (being placed across from the mean lady) and the customers having unrealistic expectations. (Seriously, it always surprises me how people don't understand how much handmade things are actually worth)

Do you have any friends who could lend you a camera so you could list them on Etsy?

Re: Ugh OP

(Anonymous) 2017-06-01 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
My cousin took some photos of the ribbon barrettes earlier. I am going to post them on the local Facebook sales groups since they don't charge for listing items. I am going to add that I can make them in school colors or to wear during formal events.
