Do you think it's okay to tell someone if their hair is a mess? Is that rude? Does it depend on the circumstances?

It's like being fat. I'm sure that they already know that their hair is a mess, unless something like a bird's nest or a localized tornado suddenly fell on their head. Then you can tell them.

It depends. If it clearly was NOT supposed to be that way (like, their hair clip has partially fallen out of their bun, or the tie to their braid has come loose and they didn't notice) and you can tell them nicely and semi-privately, I think it's not rude. Same as letting someone know they got ink on their face or their pants are unzipped. It's nicer to have a brief moment of embarrassment with one person, than to embarrass them in front of many people.

But obviously if you're like "WOAH BRO UR HAIR IS SHIT!" when someone has an ugly haircut or a bad weave or greasy hair or something, that's rude.

As someone who has naturally messy hair and has tried everything known to man, it's rude.

If it's something immediately fixable like my barrette fell out, then yeah okay tell my but if my hair is frizzy and it's humid out then please be quiet because there is nothing I can do.

I like the general rule of "if its something they can fix in a couple minutes right there tell them, if its not you're just being rude."

So if its "their hair was messed up by the wind and they could just pat it back into place" go ahead, if its more "they would have to wash it, brush it and use product to fix it", don't say anything.

Agreeing with everyone else with the if they can quickly fix it yes, if not then don't say anything. With the exception of if they ask. If I ask how my hair looks, I want an honest answer. Maybe a nicely phrased honest answer, but an honest answer.

How well does AO3 work for your fandom? What would you like to see changed? What about how someone tags/summarizes/labels (so not the fandom/pairing/author) would make you click on their story or scroll past?

Do you find there is gray area in tagging (i.e. what someone considers to be worth M rather than E, or if tagging should be viewed as advertising rather than warnings)? If so, where do you come down on the issue or how common do you find such issues?

Arranged marriage trope -- why so popular?

When I was at work today, letting my mind drift while doing some tedious, soul-sucking task as usual, my thoughts turned to Arranged Marriage AUs and the Arranged Marriage trope in Romance novels and fiction in general.

I love this trope myself, and I know it's really popular, but what are your thoughts on yaoi why? Arranged marriages were the norm for centuries in our collective memories and are still happening today around the world, so most of us probably know someone (either personally today or know of someone in our family history) who had an arranged marriage that was not happy. So what is it about the idea that makes it so popular in fiction and fanfiction?

My thoughts:

In smut/explicit romance/sexual fantasy, I see it as a "more genteel" version of a rape fantasy, in that it involves being forced (but not violently or scarily) to have sex with someone despite your reluctance, at least at first. But not even going that far, it's also a scenario of forced (again, though, not violently) intimacy and vulnerability with a near-stranger.

Even in a PG-rated/non-sexually explicit story, it usually involves both people in the couple starting off shy and awkward around each other, learning to deal with each other in more intimate circumstances than they would usually be in with near-strangers (handling the household chores, eating meals together, socializing with others), and then falling in love.

But, like, why does this appeal to me more than a story that's basically got the same components, just in a different order? Feeling shy, falling in love, getting married, being intimate and domestic. That's not nearly as fun for me to read, for some reason.

IDK...who else feels this way, and what do you think about all this?
