Places to travel in the US if you love food

(Anonymous) 2017-05-31 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hey American fser's, and others who've visited the US. What are some amazing cities to travel to for food and drinks? (Canadian foodie here who's fantasizing about doing some roadtrips/travel in the States one day.)

DC has a lot of variety.

For good BBQ Texas or Memphis, TN or Atlanta, GA. It really depends on what kind of BBQ you want.

The place that comes to mind if you are specifically going for local cuisines is New Orleans and its Cajun food. Of course, that's not going to represent foods across the wider country, but it's really tasty and unique. The US has lots of regional foods (contrary to popular belief, American food is more diverse than burgers and steaks). Some that come to mind is like, crab cakes in Maryland, New England clam chowder, lots of ocean fish in Florida, etc. I'm from the midwest and our regional dishes unfortunately aren't the type that are usually found in restaurants, it's mostly home-cooked dishes... but maybe bratwurst and cheeses?

New Orleans was the first place to come to mind for me too, even though I've never been there.

The whole West Coast, and the South, and the Northeast is pretty good as well. Also Chicago, Chicago is really good.

If I had to pick one recommendation, I guess it'd be the West Coast. LA, SF, and Portland are all pretty fucking insane.

Also one good source for American regional food stuff is roadfood.com it's really good to poke around in, not authoritative though

Moab, Utah.

No, I'm not kidding. The Moab Brewery (yes, Utah has a lot of breweries, go figure, and they're good!), Zax's Pizza, and Eddie McStiff's are places I make it a point to eat at when I'm down there for the Easter Jeep Safari.

As a bonus, there are two National Parks in the area (Arches and Canyonlands), along with a state park, lots of other outdoor stuff to do such as rafting, mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding, and absolutely gorgeous scenery.

New Orleans - bars all over the French Quarter and amazing (but really rich) food, including Cajun and Creole. It's probably the most unique food culture of any city in the U.S.

New York - for sheer diversity. They have just about every ethnic cuisine you can imagine.

Chicago - also very diverse, and with its own specialties unique to Chicago such as Italian beef and Chicago style hotdogs as well as deep dish pizza.

San Francisco - diversity, seafood, sourdough bread

Cleveland - comfort food and Polish cuisine, delis,

Nashville - bbq, red hot chicken! meat and three type southern style cooking

Honestly, every major city has something to offer even if they don't have a unique food culture the way New Orleans does.

What kind of food are you looking for?

If you're from around Vancouver or Halifax, I'm going to assume you can get pretty good seafood. If not Seattle, Washington and Portland, Oregon are good and Maine is absolutely about the lobster. For Mexican food, there are really good places in the southern regions of California, Arizona, and New Mexico. And then there's Texas, which has a lot of Tex-Mex. For Cajun, New Orleans, Louisiana is king. For southern cooking, there's the South, maybe Georgia or Kentucky. Miami, Florida has some serious Cuban food. And apparently, Philly cheesesteaks are the best in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Do you get the Food Network? It has a half-hour show called Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives that focuses on several different specific restaurants across the US each episode

If you're looking for places with a regional specialty, then you'll want to go to places like New Orleans, Chicago, you could do a whole road trip through the south comparing and contrasting different kinds of barbecue.

On the other hand, if you're looking for places where you can get lots of different kinds of food, then you'll want a huge city with lots of immigrants. In L.A. you can get pretty much every kind of food -- except poutine. I've never been able to find a solid, classic poutine (as opposed to "poutine-inspired fusion." While I haven't spent nearly as much time in San Francisco, what I've seen is similar, and of course New York is legendary for the amount of different foods you can find.
