The fact that you consider pet ownership to be ~enslavement~ tells me that there is a lunatic right in this very thread and they ain't a PETA member

I'm not some moron who's going around telling people with adopted animals that they're slaveowners. I'm against the breeding and domestication of animals for human use. Domesticated animals are forced to be with humans whether they want to or not. They have no choice in what humans they live with, often no choice in when and where they can go outside, no choice over their food, etc. Some are lucky enough to live with humans who treat them well and understand them, but many are left tethered outside or in tiny cages. Many are beaten, or neglected, or spend most of their days all alone.
I think it's great to adopt animals, but it's messed up to bring beings into this world whose lives are destined to be completely controlled by another, just so we can have someone that will love us. That's really selfish.
In an ideal world where humans didn't treat animals like objects, I believe we could befriend wild animals. There are many cases of friendships between wild animals and humans. But if you have to force an animal to stick around you, that is not a relationship of equals.
