We're living in the Trump era, where people are openly praising fascism and world leader are actively promoting Prosperity Gospels.

There is no longer such a thing as Heavy Handed when it comes to this sort of thing. Plus it makes perfect sense in context. He's warning the slave shipment of what is to come, he's got to reference our shittiness.

There's no such thing as heavy handed when it comes to political discourse. When it comes to written fiction or TV/movies? Er, yes, you can be too heavy handed.

"He's warning the slave shipment of what is to come, he's got to reference our shittiness."

And he does, at first. Warning the men about slavery and what their lives will be like as slaves makes sense. But tell me, do those guys know what "the police" are? Probably not.

They will, but mainly they'll just listen to Sting's solo stuff.

When I was young ... I was a huge fan xD.
I fail to remember book part as not my favourite part but it depends where from the shipped people were. If I recall, British used this term for various outfits and if it was one of those colonies it could have been that. However, since time and space is wonky there it was probably failing on script side. To be fair, this book confused me on timeline so could be IC.

That's kind of the point, he even says something like "You're being dragged here and people are gonna hate you and your descendants for at the very least, the next 300 years." and outlines all the things that will come. Omnipresence, yo.

Well, he is a god. Not exactly just folks.

I still loved this scene for Orlando Jones. It was so well executed. Currently probably my favorite scene of the whole show.

True. It's good to see him in a big project after he got ousted from Sleepy Hollow.

I want more of him in the show. I'm really curious how they'll end this season and if we'll have to wait a year for more episodes.

I'm hoping it does well, so we'll have a shot at seeing Anansi Boys made into a miniseries as well.

It's already been picked up for a second season, so that's a good thing. (The ads in NYC have been everywhere too and it's all over my feeds, so we'll see if people are actually watching)

Ooh I'd love an Anansi Boys series. I like that book better than American Gods.

Same here!

Same same.

(They're both well written; I just preferred the short, humorous book better.)

Anansi's a trickster looking for a sacrifice. He has the ability to whip the slaves into a froth and use their anger and belief in him and his words to expand his power to America. Why SHOULDN'T he spell it out in plain terms? That kind of manipulation is CLASSIC Anansi.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well. I mean technically he was there because someone believed in him already, so if he'd done nothing and that believer had landed in America even without a riot, Anansi would've made it to America.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-05 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
All the gods needed--and still basically need--sacrifice to maintain belief and power. We've seen it in all of the Coming to America segments (the Viking battle, the slave ship, Mexican Jesus, the animated sequence), and see it when the gods show up again (Vulcan; Bilquis; Czernobog and the cattle; Ibis & Jacquel's funeral home). Just having a believer land on the continent wouldn't be enough, it's the (blood) sacrifice that powers them.

I kinda agree because this won't be justified unless Aunt Nancy is shown to have time travel and/or future sight abilities.

But he's so right. And soooooo manipulated those men to their deaths. I'm a little concerned that he'll be portryed/seen as evil. That will be weird.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with OP.
