I've finished The House on Mango Street today, which is fantastic. And I've started The Woman in White last week. It's very readable for a Victorian novel, but that's pretty much were the positives end.

I loved The Woman in White but I have a huge weakness for Victorian melodrama so it wasn't a hard sell for me.

Haha, yeah, I didn't know just how much of a capslock! SENSATION! novel it was going to be. I've read a third of it now, and so far it's extemely melodramatic and trivial. If I bother with books of that length, I usually look for some serious depth and complexity. So far I haven't found any, though.

Yeah it sounds like Wilkie Collins isn't for you.

Have you read any George Gissing? I don't know if the plots will appeal to you, if you want a bit of the drama that The Woman in White promised just with more depth then they may seem too mundane, but I find a lot to think about with Gissing's work.

I haven't. I'll check him out, thanks. :)

Woman in White is definitely a curate's egg for me. Mostly I love it for the atmosphere (which is good at parts) and for approximately half of the characters, who are amazing.

Definitely a question of taste, yes. So far I haven't found any characters to like, although I think Laura's uncle is at least a hoot.

You don't care for Marian? She's probably my favorite character in the book.

I don't dislike her. I'm neutral so far, which is more than I can say about Hartright or Laura. But I'm still in the first half and certainly not annoyed enough yet to quit, so there's still plenty of time for Collins to surprise me pleasantly, I hope.
