What Are You Reading

Anything good? Anything you're about to start, or have just finished?

I've been going through a ton of Peter Wimsey mysteries, which are of course great and delightful and a joy to read. What characters and what a style!

Do you not find the classis in those stories off putting? I know it was endemic at the time, but I feel like other detectives written in that era were less dickish about it. (Namely Marple and Poirot.)

I'm constantly reading. I just finished "The Poisoner's Handbook" by Deborah Blum bout the history of medical examiners and poisons in NYC during Prohibition era. I found it pretty fascinating.

I also read this week "Seductive Poison" by Deborah Layton about her escape from Jonestown and how she got sucked in to the Peoples Temple cult.

I'm about to start a book on the collapse of the Soviet Union, so we'll see how that goes.

What book? Just out of curiosity

Sense and sensibility. Definitely not one of my favorite Austen books. The female leads aren't that likeable and the guys are barely there, so I fail to see why I should care about any of the romances (or rather the lack of them, since I now have 60 pages left, nothing has happened between the endgame pairs, and I expect that everyone is just going to end up together with a short mention).

I actually like S&S quite a bit, but I agree that the romances weren't strong. I liked it more for the relationship between Marianne and Elinor, and their respective character development.

I'm reading Fatal Vision by Joe McGinniss, which I have been reading off and on for months now. It's pretty fascinating if you like true crime, which I do. Hopefully I can get it finished this time.

It's a chilling story, isn't it! I was familiar with the case before reading the book and already thought the husband was guilty, but the book gives you some fascinating insight into his mindset. It also lays out an interesting case for rampant narcissism + "diet pills" = murder.

I keep waiting for the movie that ID's making about it because I love Scott Foley and I like Dave Annable.

What about this particular crime prompted you to seek out the book?

I've finished The House on Mango Street today, which is fantastic. And I've started The Woman in White last week. It's very readable for a Victorian novel, but that's pretty much were the positives end.

I loved The Woman in White but I have a huge weakness for Victorian melodrama so it wasn't a hard sell for me.

Nothing right now but I'll have lots of spare time for the next couple weeks. So I guess I can crack into that stack of novels on my bookcase.

Wicked.

I expected "Who Killed Doctor Dillamond" to be most of the story, with Elphie slowly growing more disillusioned and bitter because of how people treat her but....no, that was wrapped up rather quickly it seems.

I'm currently in the middle of both Project Paper Doll Book 2: The Hunt by Stacey Kade and No Good Deed by Goldy Moldavsky.

I also just bought Alex, Approximately today. I have a serious book buying problem.

The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs. It's about how shitty and fundamentally wrong a lot of urban planing and "renewal" has been, and it was written back in 1961.

The Tawny Man Trilogy, which is the sequel trilogy to the Farseer trilogy. It isn't as good and I really dislike Fitz now. I'm just finishing the second book, which has taken me three weeks to slog through. I went through the first trilogy in less time. I'll read the final book because I'm a bit of a completionist and I already bought it, but I'm not particularly excited about it.

I've been reading Alice Miller.

Just finished The Body Never Lies and now I'm tackling The Drama of the Gifted Child.

A lot of Star Wars books, the new stuff. Currently on Heir to the Jedi and I'm....not really feeling it.

I mean, it's a Luke book and I like HIM, but it's written in first person, so when it comes to scene changes and stuff, it's really really quick and I have to reorient myself to make them make sense to me.

That and the writing itself is a bit...juvenile. And it's NOT a young adult book.

Also, some silly stuff in it that makes me cringe.

I'm gonna finish it, but I doubt I'll ever reread it.

I'm getting antsy to read the nest Aftermath book. I know people hate Wendig's writing style, but I actually like it. Makes everything seem more intense and "RIGHT NOW" and I like that.

I just finished the last How To Train Your Dragon book. I think I'm going to wait at least a whole day to process the series' ending before starting a new read.

Just finished the No. 6 manga, which was better than I thought it'd be.

Currently reading Ganymede by Cherie Priest. It's okay at 26 pages in; hopefully it'll be a bit more engaging than the one with the zombies in Seattle turned out to be.

Bedtime: Becky Chambers, A Closed and Common Orbit. Nice light SFF.

Lunch: NK Jemisin, The Fifth Season. I might need to drop it if there's much more coerced sex.

The last thing I finished reading was an oversized Ghost in the Shell compilation (the original 80's story, not any movie tie-in).
Kinda nice to see Batou et al without any worries about a whitewashed cast or anything. Tachikomas are still cute, too.
