Should I or shouldn't I

"Should I or shouldn't I" advice thread!

Should I move back to Japan and teach English again?

I did it for a few years right after college and really enjoyed it over all. There were obviously some frustrations and low points, but I always felt really good about myself there - I was in a foreign country, making pretty good money for being a recent grad, doing something exciting and adventurous.

Now I'm in my late 20s, have an MA that's done me absolutely no good, more debt, and an office job that is killing me. I want out so badly. I can't tell if thinking about going back is just pure nostalgia or not. It probably wouldn't be good for a long term career (I've wanted to sort of build my career in an international education type field, so it's not completely irrelevant, but there's little to no direct opportunity for advancement at Japanese English schools). I hate, hate, hate this office life, and honestly my salary is so crap, I'd probably make more teaching in Japan (which isn't saying a lot, but nonetheless). I'm single, no kids, zero attachments. But I am having massive mid-life crises and am worried about my life continuing to be wasted doing stupid shit and never getting forward career-wise. I don't know. I just want another adventure.

I think the only thing is if you want to build a long term career, going to Japan may not help that and you may be delaying a problem rather then fixing it. I've known a lot of people who have done those programs and while they can be fun it's definitely hard to turn it into a permanent thing. It's also possible to go through bad experiences in those programs if you get the wrong school/coworkers.

But if you really just need a break for a while it may not be a bad idea. Since you don't have anything from preventing you from going now may be the time, but like I said just keep in mind your longterm goals.

If you get an actual teaching license, you could work at an international school depending on what your degree is in. That can get you an actual career instead of doing 1-2 year TESL contracts.

IA with the anon who said it sounded like a way to delay the inevitable, and the pull of nostalgia is particularly enticing when you're at a low point. I think if I were you, I'd look hard into ways to improve your job situation in your own country first.

You could try for teaching abroad in a different country than Japan? I don't know which ones are good, but you could look into it and you might find something that sounds like it'll work for you and have more room for advancement.

See Wonder Woman?

And should I see the 6:45 or 9:45 showing? Should I get popcorn?

Yes, see it!! I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard a lot of good things, and I hope WW proves that female super heroes are profitable.
For the time, I personally like watching movies later. And with popcorn, heh.

I'd say see it.

As for the showtime, Idk. Whichever is your preference/whichever one has the best seats/tickets left available.

And definitely get popcorn.

It's good. Not my favorite superhero movie but it's good. The worst part about it was that the dialogue was muddled in the cinema I saw it at.

Movie theater popcorn is ridiculously overpriced, and over-salted so that you buy drinks that are even worse. Wait until you get home an throw some in the microwave.

Hah, we had sound issues too. Sounded like they were talking through water. The theater had to fiddle with it a bit and then they restarted it.

slightly OT but microwave popcorn tastes weird to me, I'd rather use my hot air popper.

Just came home from seeing it and I'm going to say a big yes.

Kind of meh on the popcorn, I usually get nachos (today was cheesesticks though, om nom).

Yes. It's glorious, and tells a good story.

Update!

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
I saw it! It was good!

9:45 showing, no popcorn, but I went to the theater that serves alcohol and had a cider.

Yes. I actually want to go again sometime next week. I always try to get dinner before a show (so I don't crave popcorn), so 9:45 would be my choice between the two.

Should I go to Paris for the weekend in two weeks? Originally I planned to go to a fan convention and get some autographs, and also see a show. But the theatre more or less burned down and the production was cancelled, which leaves the fan convention. But it's also Paris, it's not like I'll be hunting for stuff to do. I'm on the fence because the trip was gonna be my reward for finishing my degree in two years from transferring. I'd budgeted for five semesters because 60% of transfer students at my school take more than four semesters from transferring to graduate, and I told myself if I did it in four I'd spend the last semester's worth on a trip. But my mom's in hospice care, I just got a new cat, and I have baby chicks coming in the mail this Tuesday. I guess I should go some other time when I can take longer than a weekend. I'm just gonna be bummed and jealous of people who got to go to the convention. I also can't find my passport, which is kind of crucial. Sigh.

How long does it take you to get there and how are you traveling? Personally, unless it's to go to a wedding, I'm not stepping on a plane or driving more than 6 hours each way for a weekend trip (and wouldn't want to spend longer than that on a train or bus).

I would not fly to Paris for a weekend trip unless I lived in Europe already maybe. (as it is, I actually live on almost the exact opposite side of the planet so the plane trip would be exhausting).

That said, it also sounds like you've got enough going on that you should probably pass on it right now. I'd suggest you wait and figure out some other trip you can take in the future that you'd enjoy and be able to spend more time on.

Should I or shouldn't I kill myself?

Re: Should I or shouldn't I

don't

Re: Should I or shouldn't I

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Don't kill yourself anon. I understand the desire because I am there right now, but don't.

Re: Should I or shouldn't I

You should not.

Re: Should I or shouldn't I

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
No, don't kill yourself. I mean, unless you're an immortal and you're, I dunno, sick of having to learn new languages and concepts because when you were a kid, flint knives were the hot new thing. Otherwise, eventually you'll die anyway, so there's hope things might get better before you do. And I'm not speaking from a position of happy fluffy bunnies and rainbows, here. I'm the youngest person in my (tiny) family by over 30 years, have no friends, no siblings, no cousins, no significant other, and one cat. I'm a hoarder and will likely die alone of cancer (5 relatives and counting) or addiction to drugs and/or alcohol (5 relatives and counting) and get eaten by whatever pets I have when I kick the bucket (no one so far, maybe I'll be the first!) I've wanted to kill myself before, but even when life rains down shit, I'm always (eventually) glad I chickened out. Even if it's just because I saw a cool bird or cooked a really awesome meal. Life doesn't have to be constantly amazing to be worth living. I don't believe in an afterlife or reincarnation or anything, though, so I'm coming at this from a "this life is all you get, and it's better than nothing" standpoint. I hope you find your own reasons not to die, even if they're tiny.
